U.S. lawmakers open their mouths: there is "funding" from China in the protest group in colleges and universities to support Pakistan

author:Shijin Akino

Recently, as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has escalated again, dissident student protests have swept through colleges and universities across the United States, and the academic debate on the Middle East has become increasingly intense. But some Republican lawmakers have openly accused these peaceful protest groups of being "funded" by China. What is the reason for this move, and what is the intention behind it?

The controversy began when Rep. Jimenez, Republican of Florida, threw out headlines on Fox News on April 24. He asserted that "don't be surprised that China is involved" if the funding sources of pro-Palestinian protest groups in universities are investigated in depth.

But when pressed by the moderator for evidence, Jimenez was vague, saying only that "through certain channels" he learned that "China finances protesters through other organizations."

In fact, Jimenez himself is a member of the U.S.-China Select Committee on Strategic Competition in the U.S. House of Representatives, which has repeatedly attacked China. His move is clearly a deliberate attempt to discredit these student organizations with "Chinese conspiracy theories" in order to divert attention, a tactic that highlights the obvious political purpose.

As soon as the topic came out, it was quickly relayed by some politicians and law enforcement agencies. For example, New York Police Deputy Chief Dotri claimed that the tents he saw on the Columbia campus were "all the same color and very similar", and he concluded that "someone was behind it".

But in fact, it is likely that the tents were erected by the protesters themselves or purchased through donations, and have nothing to do with the Chinese government.

Part of the reason why the move has been praised is that the United States has become increasingly hardline on China. Some commentators have pointed out that how to create a "China threat" within the Republican Party has become a major business, and the actions of Jimenez and others are one of them.

Due to the lack of factual basis, it is essentially a political out-of-context and generalized business opinion, rather than the normal investigative procedure of holding a public hearing based on facts.

However, we should not be led by the nose by this political tug-of-war. The essence of the protests is Palestinian human rights and freedom of movement, and how the United States should face the growing political situation in the Middle East. Turning the secondary issue into a "Chinese funding" issue is in essence engaging in political division and erasing the legitimate demands of the students.

After all, in the United States, there is the right to peacefully express dissent on campus, which is an important part of academic freedom. Just as Western countries are in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, we should fully understand the positions and motivations of these students. And politicians throw out unfounded accusations, which seem to be more like trying to evade the substantive issues and divert public attention.

Only by truly paying attention to the essence of the students' demands, affirming their peaceful and rational way of expressing their attitudes, and finding a fair solution to the Middle East problem will the US government win the trust and support of the public.

At a time when students are clamoring for an end to armed conflict and the safety of civilians, politicians are evading the problem and their own responsibilities by throwing out baseless accusations and trying to point the finger at other countries. As a party to the Middle East issue, the United States has long been deeply tied up in this game, and should not be viewed selectively, let alone downplayed.

It is never wise to use forceful or threatening tactics in the face of dissident students. Blind repression will magnify the controversy and lead public opinion to extremes. In contrast, listening to different voices in an open and inclusive manner, respecting individual positions, leading the discussion to return to substance, and seeking consensus from all parties will be the best way to resolve the crisis.

We should also note that this incident not only touches on the geopolitical and political aspects, but also touches on the major issues of human rights and citizens' participation in politics at a deeper level.

Today, when the information society is increasingly revealing the perspective of a wide range of netizens, the government should speak with the people with empathy and conscience to resolve differences, instead of hiding evil intentions and denying the legitimate demands of others. This will determine how the United States will build trust and partnerships with people around the world.

Only through an open and inclusive attitude, a multi-faceted perspective, and a determination to resolve substantive issues can the U.S. government enhance its soft power to unite the hearts and minds of the people and lead the region toward peace. The lessons of a political maelstrom may become a valuable experience for all parties to remember.
