Taiping Island has important strategic value and plays an important role in waterway safety, maritime disaster notification, meteorological monitoring in the South China Sea, and international flight information. At the same time, China's Taiping Island is also rich in natural resources, including forest vegetation, fish and marine resources.
The Chinese government has always firmly maintained sovereignty over Taiping Island and the Nansha Islands. On January 28, 2016, Ma Ying-jeou, the leader of China's Taiwan authorities, landed on Taiping Island, the largest island in the Nansha Islands, to visit the personnel stationed on the island and deliver a speech.
However, it needs to be noted that Taiwan is part of China, which is a fact based on historical, legal, cultural and international norms of international relations. Any attempt to split China's territory and undermine national unity is undesirable.
