Located in the central urban area of Shenzhen, Shenzhen Railway Group and the construction unit China Railway 22nd Bureau challenge the international problem of narrow underground space in the built-up area of the megacity with technological innovation, and creatively propose to replace two small shields with a diameter of 8.8 meters with a diameter of 13.27 meters, so that it is possible for the built-up area of the megacity to reach the intercity railway, and minimize the impact of tunnel crossing on the surrounding buildings and the occupation of underground space.

After the large-diameter shield is adopted, the geometric progression of construction risk and construction difficulty increases, and the long-distance passage of large-section tunnel through shallow buried water-rich strata and upper soft and lower hard composite strata, the requirements of shield equipment configuration increase, the frequent replacement of shield cutters, and the increase of large cross-section to the stratum and environmental disturbance, etc., bring great challenges to the implementation of the project. As an international shield power, the builder tailored the "Qiangguo" ultra-large diameter shield machine for the project, which interprets the highest contemporary international level of shield equipment.

It is understood that the diameter of the "Qiangguo" shield machine reaches an astonishing 13.27 meters, the total weight is more than 3,300 tons, equipped with more than 200 wear-resistant tools, and has super rock breaking ability. At the same time, it adopts the most advanced electrical system, advanced grouting system in the tunnel, excavation management system, automatic muck measurement system, and atmospheric pressure tool change system, so that the "Qiangguo" has a super "wisdom brain" and "nerve center", and makes it possible to safely construct a 13-meter-level super-large diameter tunnel in the core area of the megacity.
