The use of surge protectors in industrial connections

author:LCOM Nordon

In the connection of industrial applications, there will be occasional current or voltage surges, in order to better ensure the stability of the connection, in some special occasions need to use surge protectors. This article will focus on the different categories of connections and introduce the corresponding surge protection applications.

Category I, Cat 5 and Category 5 network connectivity

The use of surge protectors in industrial connections
  • Outdoor 10/100 Base-T Super 5 High Power Arrester - RJ45 Socket

CAT5e Ethernet surge protectors have an improved frequency response and can be used in 10/100Base-T Ethernet systems. Models include both indoor and outdoor models. PTC resettable fuse, Power over Ethernet (PoE) compatible, weatherproof ABS enclosure with sealed cover and shielded RJ45 receptacle.

2. Category 6 network connections

  • Indoor-grade shielded Category 6 dual-port 10/100/1000Base-T surge arrester, PoE, RJ45 connector

Surge protectors provide surge protection for up to two Ethernet lines using 10/100/1000 data rates. The use of ultra-low capacitance diodes ensures superior high-frequency response and improved return losses for four data pairs per line under surge protection. The unit is powered over 802.3af with Power over Ethernet (PoE) and is compatible with normal or reverse polarity systems.

The rugged aluminum chassis can be mounted on a wall or on a shelf. The device is provided with mounting holes. Individual protector modules are field-replaceable.

3. Digital video connection

  • Indoor-grade dual-port coaxial video surge protector with isolated BNC connector

Dual-port surge protectors protect video equipment from damaging surges caused by lightning or noisy electrical equipment. These units are ideal for protecting surveillance and CCTV cameras, DVRs, surveillance PCs, and video monitors.

4. RS-232 connection

  • Outdoor RS-232 Surge Protector (Surge Arrester)

The low-capacitance diode array guarantees that the suppressor does not degrade the RS-232 signal. This unit will protect up to eight RS-232 data lines. It also supports two RS-232 lines without a hardware handshake or one RS-232 line with a hardware handshake. For more comprehensive protection, two units are used, one at one end of the line.

5. USB connection

  • USB Surge Protector, Type A/Type A Panel Mount with Pre-Strip Wire

To ensure the speed of USB 2.0, the device uses ultra-low capacitance diodes to protect the data cables. This USB surge protector is perfect for protecting your PC from WiFi client adapters and surveillance cameras that are used with long USB extension cables. This USB surge protector can be installed in enclosures, panels, wall panels, or as a stand-alone product in-line.
