Painted in 1697, "Three Friends of the Cold Year" is a painting painted by Bada Shanren with deep affection after being drunk, and used to give it to his friend Shen Yuancang. The "Great Fire", "Wenqu Star" and "Big Dipper" mentioned in the inscription poem in the painting are all symbolic stars in the hearts of the ancients, and the Bada Shanren compared these stars to Mr. Shen, which shows his respect for this close friend.

In the works of the Bada Shanren, the inscription of more than 100 words is rare, and this inscription is 194 words long, which is the longest inscription among the eight major flower works (excluding landscape and feather paintings), all written in cursive.

The work depicts mountains and rocks and double pines, the pen is simple and broad, and the layout is sparse and concise. The trunks of the mountain stones are all written with dry lines, but the leaves can be seen with thick ink, which makes the mountains light and the trees thick, and the scenery of the old pine slope stone is desolate and sparse.
The landscape paintings of the Eight Great Dynasties in their later years seem to be remnants of mountains and rivers, a bleak and desolate, but in fact they are not, they elevate all natural phenomena to a Zen realm of emptiness.
