Should a sprain be cold or hot?

For any joint sprain, it is a cold compress in the early stage and a hot compress in the later stage. Don't reverse the order.

The purpose of early cold compresses is to control edema and relieve pain.

When the swelling has subsided, the cold compress can be stopped, up to 48 hours after the injury. The recommended frequency is every 2~3 hours for 15~20 min.

The purpose of the late warm compress is to speed up circulation and promote damage repair.

Once the swelling has subsided, or after 48 hours of the sprain, warm compresses can be started. At present, there is no recommendation on the frequency of hot compresses, and you can consider hot compresses once in the morning, noon and evening according to your own situation, each time for 15~20 min, and the temperature should be 40~50 °C.
