Why is lactose intolerance possible?

Lactose is a naturally occurring substance in milk, which can be broken down into galactose and glucose, which is the energy that provides energy to the rapidly developing brain!

Because lactose needs to be broken down by the lactase produced in the small intestine before it can be absorbed, otherwise, it will sneak into the large intestine and "jump up and down" and "make waves" in the large intestine, making people bloated and diarrhea. We call lactose intolerance when lactose is not digested and absorbed, and it is uncomfortable!

Why is lactose intolerant?

To put it bluntly, it's actually a lack of lactase.

In addition to congenital, very rare, lactase deficiency, there are two common causes of lactose intolerance:

Primary and secondary

One is long-term and the other is temporary.

Let's start with primary lactose intolerance:

The production of lactase is genetically determined and decreases with age. Around the time our baby begins to enter school age, there will be a gradual decrease in lactase, which can lead to lactose intolerance.

There is also secondary lactose intolerance (common in babies at a young age):

It refers to the fact that the baby has diarrhea (because of enteritis, or rotavirus infection, etc.), which damages the intestinal mucosa, and then lactase deficiency, which causes lactose to be decomposed and utilized, resulting in abdominal pain, bloating, bowel sounds, and foamy watery poop.

The more severe the diarrhea is, the more serious the intestinal damage is, and the more severe the lactase loss. After the intestinal condition improves, lactase can be slowly produced, and lactose can be digested.

What should I do when my baby is lactose intolerant?

1. Exclusively breastfed babies.

Continue to insist on breastfeeding, you can add lactase appropriately (there are related products to buy), and the specific dosage is recommended to follow the doctor's instructions.

2. Formula-fed babies.

If you choose a regular formula, add lactase before feeding, or you can choose a lactose-free formula for the time being.

3. Start adding complementary foods to your baby.

It is also necessary to pay attention to the choice of complementary foods. Foods rich in lactose refer to animal milk and its products, such as: milk (skimmed/full-fat/low-fat), goat's milk, milk powder, milk snacks, etc. This type of intake needs to be controlled.

However, like Shuhua milk, lactose is processed in advance, which will be better digested and absorbed.

Like yogurt, cheese, processed cheese, etc., lactose is also fermented, which is also better digested and absorbed. It can be selected according to the situation.

If you have lactose intolerance and diarrhea, don't be afraid and actively adjust your feeding action. It can make the baby eat enough milk and grow better.
