Wherever the road is repaired, the grass squares will be weaved, and the green will spread. The sand-piercing highways not only facilitate the entry of desertification control materials and measures into the hinterland of the desert, but also open up the channels for the people in the desert areas to contact the outside world, providing convenient conditions for the development of the desert areas.

At present, the Wuri line of the 15th sand-piercing highway in Wengniute Banner, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia has just been opened, and the 16th sand-piercing highway is being intensified.

At the end of March this year, the Wuri line of the newly opened sand-piercing highway in Wengniute Banner has not yet hardened the road surface, but the sand control work on both sides of the road has begun. In the past two days, 54-year-old herdsmen Su and Battle have brought more than a dozen villagers to the site early every morning to press grass and cut obstacles, ensuring that the straw grid laying of more than 40 acres of sandy land is completed every day.

Su Hebatel, Secretary of the Party Branch of Ulan Aodu Gacha in Chifeng Wengniute Banner: After the Wuri Line was completed, the problem of difficulty in traveling for 32 herdsmen was solved. Relying on this road, our village has contracted another 6,000 acres of sand control tasks.

Hongmei, a herdsman, told reporters that she had lived in the sand nest for decades, but now the road is open, it is convenient to travel, and life is more convenient.

Hongmei, a herdsman from Wulan Aodu Gacha in Chifeng Wengniute Banner: Originally, we rode horses or drove four-wheeled vehicles, and when there was something going on, we walked all day in the camp, but now after the road is repaired, we buy a small car and go out directly. Originally, if we sold a cow or sheep, the old customers couldn't come, it was inconvenient. Now as soon as the phone calls, they come to our door, and the cattle and sheep are sold.

The existing desertified land area of Wengniute Banner in Chifeng City is 6.67 million mu, accounting for 37.4% of the total area of the whole banner. In recent years, the local area has explored a sandy land management model of "opening a sand-crossing highway - cutting and controlling". After the road is repaired, straw is used on both sides to lay grass squares to carry out engineering sand fixation, which can avoid the mobile sand dunes affecting the road traffic. In addition, when saplings are planted on the roadside in spring and autumn, the survival rate of saplings can also be improved. Among the 15 sand-piercing roads that have been built, Wubai Highway is the longest asphalt concrete sand-crossing highway in Inner Mongolia. In this season, the pine trees on both sides of the highway are full of greenery, and the results of sand management have been revealed.

At present, the local area of sandy land has been extended to 3.309 million mu through road desertification control, and it is expected that 350,000 mu of sandy land will be treated this year.
