Osmanthus is an important garden landscape tree species in China, which has high ornamental value and can also be used for medicinal and edible purposes. In recent years, many new varieties with ornamental value have been cultivated (Zheng et al., 2021), including Sijigui (Tu et al., 2020, Wu Qichao et al., 2020). In May 2008, one of the more than 20,000 cuttings of 'Sijigui' in Tongnan, Chongqing was found to have a solid seedling with slightly yellowing at the edge of the leaves, and the specificity was mainly reflected in the color leaves. In January 2018, it was awarded the Forest Tree Seed Certificate by the Chongqing Forestry Bureau, and was named 'Hongyun Caigui' (Figure 1).

Characteristics of the breed

Evergreen bushes or small trees with low, semi-open, medium-grown, spherical crowns. The old branches are gray, the young branches are green with rusty yellow halos, and the new shoots are purple-red. The leaves are opposite, ovate-elliptic, glabrous on both sides, the leaves are 7.0 ~ 10.5 cm long, 3.2 ~ 4.5 cm wide, the tip is acutely pointed or caudally pointed, the leaf margin is fine and serrate-like, the young petiole is purple-red, the old petiole is very light purple-red, 5 ~ 6 mm long, the edge of the young leaf is purple-red or pink at first, light purple-red in the middle, and then gradually turns to yellowish-white or yellow on the edge, green in the middle, each leaf presents flowering leaves, 2-10 per year In January, the upper young leaves of the plant are different shades of red, and the lower leaves are yellow and green, and the whole plant is colorful. There are 1 ~ 2 pairs of flower buds in the leaf axils, each flower bud has 5 ~ 9 flowers, and in autumn it is a cluster of umbrella inflorescences without a total peduncle, with medium flowers and medium aroma. Flowers white to pale yellow (RHS-CC < 2B). The corolla is broadly bell-shaped, the pistil is completely aborted, and it does not bear fruit after flowering. In winter and spring, it is panicles, the number of flowers in the inflorescence is as many as 7 ~ 16, the flower color is dark yellow-white (RHS-CC3A~4B), the flowering period is from mid to late August to mid-May of the following year, about 10 months long, the temperature is suitable for annual flowering, and the flower fragrance is strong.

Key points of cultivation techniques

It is suitable for open-field cultivation in the south of the Qinling Mountains. It has good resistance to stress, can withstand extreme high temperatures of 40 °C, and has no leaf burn, no leaf fall in winter, and no frostbite in autumn.
