Mr. Tang Fazhou, the chief operating officer of Baishi Shantang Culture Media, once said: Some netizens asked me to write down the process of engraving with pictures and texts, and today I tried to write down the whole process of my engraving in as much detail as possible, hoping to help friends who have just started engraving, please advise me!
First, the preparation of the engraving work
There are some basic preparations that need to be made before engraving a seal, such as a carving knife, a carving bed, a toothbrush, a nylon head pen, etc., and here are some of my tools, beginners can prepare as needed.
Two large and small nylon faucet pens, a set of aluminum alloy rulers and triangles, the nylon faucet pen will not form scratches on the printing surface. The large one is used for stroke when writing large prints and engraved Zhu inscriptions, and the small ones are used for small printing drafts. I bought a small pen is a Japanese flag quick-drying oily marker, double nib, the nib is 0.4~1.0mm, the large pen is German Schneider's oily quick-drying marker, the nib is 1-3nn, straight so use imported pens, mainly because the adhesion of ink is stronger than domestic pens, and it dries very quickly, not easy to stain the printing surface. The ruler is a powerful aluminum alloy ruler, which is not easy to wear off the scale compared to the plastic ruler and is more durable.
A set of carving knives and carving knives cowhide protective covers. The price of the carving knife ranges from a few dollars to more than 10,000 yuan, and this is purchased according to the individual's financial ability. Generally, it is more appropriate to prepare at least three knives, and I generally use a Yongzi brand of the Yinlin myth series of the Suzaku flat knife, the knife edge is 8mm wide, and the seal within 3 cm can be engraved. A Dugu flat-mouthed knife blunt knife of Yongzi brand, the width of the knife edge is 9.5mm, mainly used for large seals. A NPZ-6.5 flat-edged knife from the Yongzi Master Song series, with a knife edge width of 6.5mm, is used for the same purpose as Suzaku. A Yongzi brand of the Master Song series NPZ-3, the width of the knife edge is 3mm, mainly used for engraving small seals below 1 cm and fine repair. A Yongzi brand of Master Song series NXEB-5, this is a beveled knife, the blade width is 5mm, mainly used for fine repair. In addition, there is a Japanese Dule bevel knife, the function is also finely repaired, a 9mm wide white steel knife, mainly used to knock the edge, because the Yongzi brand is tungsten steel knife, more brittle and easy to break, I accidentally fell on the floor and broke two (heartache). As for the water sandpaper, the printing bed, etc. are not on the picture.
Second, start the engraving
1. Grinding and printing
Before engraving, go to the antique market to buy a few square 2.5mm or so of the stone, about the stone we check on the Internet, I have used Qingtian stone, Shoushan stone, Dandong stone, Nishan stone, etc., and finally prefer to use Shoushan stone. This mainly depends on your personal liking, anyway, you can carve, beginners buy ten or twenty yuan or so to practice on the line, and then buy dozens of yuan to one or two hundred yuan on the line, I use basically within this price, the local tyrant and the rich second generation can use tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of millions and higher prices, anyway, rich and can be a collection, depending on personal economic ability.
After buying the printing stone, you must polish the printing surface by yourself, I generally use 220 mesh coarse grinding, 600 mesh medium grinding, 1200 mesh fine grinding. When polishing, it is best to pad a piece of tempered glass below to ensure the flatness of the printing surface, I use a tempered glass fruit cutting board. When grinding, it is necessary to grind clockwise, and constantly change the direction of printing, and must not grind up and down or left and right, so that it is easy to grind the printing surface to the opposite edge. When polishing, the hand must be stable and flat, otherwise it is easy to grind into a four-cornered high-print center convex.
2. Draw grids
The purpose of the grid is to locate the position of the word and ensure that the position of each word is basically equal, so as to achieve the regularity of the printing surface.
I'm now engraving a two-character white seal, so I'll just draw a line in the middle. Try to determine the upper and lower points in the same direction when drawing the grid, mainly because I am afraid that some of the printing surface is not unconventional, and each edge may have a slight error.
This is the finished centerline. This line is only the approximate positioning of the word, and it will be slightly interspersed and adjusted according to the layout of the word when engraving to achieve the best combination of words.
3. Printing, generally written with a brush on sulfuric acid paper, then copied onto the printing surface, and then repeatedly checked with a small mirror in order to achieve the best printing effect. I'm lazy, and Qi Pai Yin is very natural, so I use a nylon pen to draw the shape of the reverse character, and then randomly adjust it when engraving. This depends on the individual's ability to control the structure of the text, and if you write more, you will probably know what the effect of printing will be.
Before printing, you need to check the seal dictionary, and it is best to engrave the dictionary of Qi Baishi seal to ensure that the seal method is correct, and do not engrave the seal characters that you take for granted. As for which character to use in the end, it is determined according to the layout of the printing surface. I checked the comparison between Qi Baishi's seal carving dictionary and the calligraphy dictionary on my mobile phone.
4. Open the carving
The biggest feature of Qi Pai Yin is that one side of the light and one hair, that is, the professional term of the single knife straight into, so when the knife must be guaranteed fast, accurate and stable, can not drag the mud and water hesitantly, so that the carved strokes will be weak and powerless, completely lost the Qi Pai seal carving of the bold and imposing feeling of the rainbow.
Engrave the left side of the word first, my habit is to engrave from top to bottom, first engrave horizontal and then vertical, depending on personal habits. When carving the horizontal painting, the seal is horizontally turned over, from the bottom to the top from left to right, so as to ensure that the bottom of the horizontal painting is a light edge, and the top will be due to the natural collapse of the seal stone to form a rough edge. The vertical painting is also carved from the bottom to the top, and the vertical paintings of the general Qi school seal carving are relatively long, very decorative, and the visual effect is also better. When the long pen is engraved, you must be calm and steady, otherwise you will not have that kind of refreshing feeling, and you may not be able to connect the horizontal painting where it needs to be connected. When the vertical painting should be straight, it should be straight, and when it should be lonely, it should feel that the strokes are elastic and tense, otherwise it will not reflect the momentum of Qi school seal carving.
When I carved the lower part of the right half of the static character, I first carved a vertical drawing of the contention character, so as to locate the middle line. Then complete the engraving of the strokes above.
The overall carved effect.
First of all, the first engraved print, printed on paper, and then photographed with a mobile phone, the purpose of this is that it is difficult to do a party to complete all the strokes at a time is very satisfied, and the effect can be seen when it is printed, and the second is that the mobile phone can be very convenient to enlarge the printing surface after taking pictures, and see whether the subtle parts need to be refined.

According to the imperfections seen after magnification, use a knife to refine, pay attention to the refinement, try to keep the knife in the same direction as the first moment.
After refinement, take a picture with your mobile phone and zoom in to check if there is anything that needs to be trimmed, if not, you can proceed to the next step of knocking.
