Sui literature Dugu Empress Biography

Dugu Jia (qié) Luo (544-602), a Xianbei ethnic group, was a native of Luoyang County, Henan County (now Luoyang City, Henan Province). The empress of Emperor Wen of Sui, after her death, was called the queen of literature.

A jealous political strong woman

Dugu Jialuo's father, Dugu Xin, was a nobleman of the Xianbei tribe, assisted Emperor Wen of the Northern Zhou Dynasty Yuwentai to create a hegemony, ranked one of the Eight Pillar Kingdoms, and his status was very respected;

Dugu Jialuo is the seventh daughter in the family, who not only carries the independence and boldness of her father's nomads, but also has the elegance and erudition of her mother's Han culture.

Dugu believed in Buddhism, so he named her Jia Luo in Sanskrit, which means "agarwood". Dugu Xin and the general Yang Zhong had been good friends for many years, and he took a fancy to his son, Yang Jian, the later Emperor Wen of Sui, who was extraordinary, so he married the fourteen-year-old Dugu Jialuo to him.

At that time, Yuwentai had just died, and his nephew Yuwenhu was in charge of the government. Duguxin was unfortunately involved in a rebellion, and Yuwen forced him to commit suicide.

At this time, Dugu Jialuo had just married into the Yang family. The Yang family was also unwilling to rely on Yuwen Hu, and the Duguxin incident made Yang Jian also suspicious, and even often worried about his life.

In the face of such a sinister political environment, Dugu Jialuo and Yang Jian supported each other, and their relationship became deeper and deeper. Dugu Jialuo is filial to his in-laws, low-key and humble, and is highly praised. Coupled with their political acumen, in those treacherous years, the husband and wife became each other's closest comrades-in-arms and spiritual pillars.

It wasn't until Emperor Wu of Zhou personally killed Yuwen Hu that Yang Jian and his wife breathed a sigh of relief. Emperor Wu of Zhou appreciated the integrity of the Yang family for not being attached to Yuwen Hu, and specially married Yang Jian's eldest daughter Yang Lihua, the crown princess, who was the empress of Emperor Xuan of Zhou.

Emperor Xuan was tyrannical and unreasonable, and Yang Lihua often persuaded her, which made Emperor Xuan angry and wanted to kill her. When Dugu Jialuo learned about it, he immediately entered the palace and kowtowed in front of Emperor Xuan, until he was bleeding all over his face, and Emperor Xuan was angry.

Emperor Xuan of Zhou reigned for only one year, and then ceded the throne to his son Emperor Jing of Zhou, and died of illness the following year. Due to the young age of Emperor Jing of Zhou, the ministers pretended to pass on the edict and let Yang Jian enter the palace to assist the government.

Yang Jian had already planned to seize the throne, but he was slow to make up his mind, Dugu Jialuo said: "Now the general trend has been decided, you have been riding a tiger and it is difficult to get down, you must work hard!" Yang Jian no longer hesitated, forced Emperor Zhou Jing to give up the throne, established the Sui Dynasty, was for Emperor Wen of Sui, and canonized Dugu Jialuo as the queen.

Queen Dugu is very politically talented and has a sense of the overall situation. Once, the Turks who were engaged in border trade with the Sui Dynasty brought a box of pearls and asked for 8 million yuan, and a minister persuaded Queen Dugu to buy it. Queen Dugu said, "That's not what I need. Now that foreigners often invade the borders, and the soldiers fight and toil hard, it is better to reward the eight million dollars to the meritorious ones. The ministers were very happy to see that the queen was so virtuous.

At every court meeting, Emperor Wen of Sui went by car with Empress Dugu. After arriving at the main hall, Queen Dugu stayed outside the pavilion gate and asked the eunuch to follow Emperor Wen of Sui into the palace and be responsible for the communication between the two.

Emperor Wen of Sui had some omissions in handling court affairs, and Empress Dugu reminded and corrected them at any time through eunuchs. After retiring from the court, the two took a car back to the palace together, and the relationship was very close, known as the "two saints".

Queen Dugu never showed favoritism. Once, her cousin committed a capital crime, and Emperor Wen of Sui intended a lighter punishment. Empress Dugu said: "This is a matter of the state, how can you bend the law for personal gain?" Her cousin was finally executed, and Emperor Wen of Sui respected her even more.

Later, Queen Dugu suddenly fell seriously ill, and after investigation, it was caused by her cousin's witchcraft curse, and she was to be executed according to the law. Empress Dugu went on a hunger strike for three days, and begged Emperor Wen of Sui bitterly: "If he is executed for disturbing the government and brutalizing the people, I dare not interfere." Now because I have been convicted, I beg Your Majesty to spare his life. Emperor Wen of Sui was very distressed and pardoned his cousin's capital crime.

Queen Dugu was extremely disgusted with men's inattentiveness, and agreed at the beginning of her marriage to Emperor Wen of Sui that she would never take concubines. Once, Emperor Wen of Sui fell in love with a palace maid, and Queen Dugu actually took advantage of Emperor Wen of Sui to go to court and killed the palace maid.

Emperor Wen of Sui was shocked and angry after retreating from the court, rode out of the palace on horseback, ran into the valley, sighed and said: "I am the son of heaven, and I have no freedom at all!" After the minister's hard persuasion, he returned to the palace late at night. Queen Dugu immediately admitted her mistake, and the two reconciled as before.

This incident caused serious mental trauma to Queen Dugu, and after that, even the ministers favored the concubines, and Queen Dugu would ask Emperor Wen of Sui to depose them.

Yang Guang, the Yang Emperor of Sui, who was still the king of Jin at the time, took advantage of his mother's point and tried to make himself dedicate himself to winning her favor. Prince Yang Yong didn't like the crown princess chosen by his mother, and raised many concubines, and Queen Dugu was very dissatisfied.

Later, the crown princess died suddenly, and Queen Dugu suspected that she was killed by Yang Yong, so she sent someone to spy on him. After Yang Guang learned about it, he took the opportunity to pretend to be pitiful in front of Queen Dugu and framed Yang Yong for wanting to poison himself.

Queen Dugu was even more convinced that Yang Yong was vicious, and said angrily: "I am still alive, he will treat you like this, and when I die, won't I treat you as fish and meat and slaughter you at will?" So she persuaded Emperor Wen of Sui to depose Yang Yong and re-establish Yang Guang as the crown prince.

In 602, Queen Dugu died of illness at the age of fifty-nine.

Emperor Wen of Sui lost his companion who had been in the same boat for more than 40 years, and was deeply affected and began to indulge in lust, and after two years, he fell ill and said regretfully: "If the queen was still alive, I would not have fallen into this field!" Soon Emperor Wen of Sui also died.
