Royal Mail has launched stamps that depict the history and culture of the Viking Age.

This set of stamps was issued on 15 February to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Jorvik Viking Centre in the city of York and to celebrate the rich heritage that the Vikings left to Britain.

Since it first opened in 1984, the Jorvik Viking Centre has attracted more than 20 million visitors.

The center originated from a large-scale archaeological excavation in May 1976, the Bronze Gate Excavation, which led to the establishment of the center.

Visitors can experience a recreation of the Viking York cityscape, including simulations of sounds and smells, all based on meticulous historical research.

It shows that the Viking worldview is not dominated by violence alone, but has a complex history of settlement, craft, and trade.
