In 1942, Japan invaded and occupied the Philippines.
During this period, in order to continue to use some of the stamps from the period of American rule, the Japanese resorted to stamping and mark-ups, but always erasing the words "United States of America".
Similarly, in September 1942, as a result of the increase in the postage of basic letters from 2 to 5 cents, the Japanese occupation government revised a pre-war stamp to produce a suitable postage stamp: a brownish-red stamp, which had been stamped in 1937, was put into use again, and the original inscription was covered with a thick blue line.
While waiting for the printer to deliver these stamped stamps, the post office clerks got creative and handcrafted the blue bars with rulers and pens, unexpectedly creating a highly sought-after variant of the stamps for philatelic enthusiasts.
