Chasov Yar is the center of the second line of defense established by the Ukrainian army after the defeat of the battle of Bakhmut and its retreat to the west, if Chasov Yar is lost, then Ukraine's Donbass Canal defense line will collapse, and NATO's prediction that the Ukrainian army will be driven back to the right bank of the Dnieper River will come true. In fact, this is the most pessimistic assessment of the battlefield situation by NATO experts after the emergence of the great rout of the Ukrainian army in the Battle of Avadiivka.
But the command team of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Syrsky, believes that they can hold out in Chasov Yar for at least 6 months and launch a strategic counteroffensive against the Russian army after external military assistance arrives. Part of the Ukrainian defenders of the village of Bodanivka surrendered to the Russian army, and part retreated to a small hill on the north side of the canal microdistrict. This is the only "small plateau" in the region, and the Ukrainian army hopes to build a defense on this small hill. If the Russian army storms the hills, the Ukrainian army can condescendingly and vigorously kill and injure the Russian offensive forces. But this is just wishful thinking on the part of the Ukrainian army.
