Introduction: "The Old Man and the Sea" is a novella written by American writer Hemingway in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. The story revolves around an elderly Cuban fisherman who fights a giant marlin in the Gulf Stream far offshore. Although Hemingway's old man is tragic, he has the quality of Nietzsche's "superman", calmly accepting failure, calmly facing death, these "tough guys" embody Hemingway's philosophy of life and moral ideals, that is, human beings do not bow to fate, never admit defeat, the fighting spirit and a positive and optimistic attitude towards life.

As one of the most outstanding American novelists in the 20th century, Hemingway has an extremely legendary experience, and his literary achievements have a pivotal position in the history of American literature and even the history of world literature. His representative works include "Farewell to Arms", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "The Old Man and the Sea" and so on. As Hemingway's most influential work, "The Old Man and the Sea" has won the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize in Literature, and is a palace-level work of world literature.
"A man can be destroyed, but not defeated". This is a quote from the book "The Old Man and the Sea". I remember when I first read this book, it was still in the Chinese textbook of the third grade of primary school, when I was still young, and I was just curious about how big the marlin in the book was. Now, after many years, reading this book again, I have changed my mood, and I am more of an admirer and admiration for the indestructible spirit of the protagonist in the book.
"The Old Man and the Sea" mainly tells the story of an old fisherman who goes out to sea to fish. In this book, the protagonist Santiago, who is sixty years old, does not give up even though he has not caught a fish for dozens of days, and sets out on his own sea journey again and again, and finally, on the 85th day, he catches a marlin that is 18 feet long. However, fate does not seem to favor the old man very much, and when he returns, the smell of blood on the big marlin attracts a group of sharks, although the old man stubbornly fights with the sharks, driving them away again and again, but the strength of one person is limited after all, and when he finally returns to the harbor, the big marlin has been bitten by the sharks and only a skeleton remains. Every time I read this, I can't help but feel sorry for this old fisherman who has experienced vicissitudes, lamenting the unfairness of fate for him, but at the same time, I am impressed by his indomitable spirit. It is hard to imagine how an old man could fight with hordes of ferocious sharks in the waves of the sea, and what was it that had always supported him in the darkness? As the old fisherman said, "A man is not born to be defeated!", this is a great declaration, a flag waving cry in the struggle against fate.
There are many stories about fighting against fate, but the story of "The Old Man and the Sea" has made me read it over and over again, sometimes, I am thinking, people in this life, many times they have to face difficulties, the same difficulties, different people face different moods, compared to escape and retreat, I prefer to be the group of people who never give up and fight bravely, their eyes will always shine with the light of faith.
