The Great Earthquake of the Empire, and finally the Congenital Coup

Sentence / Kodama

What is the main contradiction and what is the secondary contradiction is the key factor related to the success or failure of anything.

The Xuanwumen Revolution resolved the contradiction between King Shimin of Qin and Emperor Li Yuan, and the congenital coup resolved the contradiction between the crown prince Li Longji and Emperor Li Dan, both of which were contradictions between the imperial power and the military meritorious faction. It's just that in the process of actual operation, Li Shimin transformed the contradiction to the prince Jiancheng, and Li Longji transformed the contradiction to his aunt, Princess Zhenguo Taiping.

On the night of June 20, 710, the king of Linzi, Li Longji, launched a coup d'état in Tanglong, which shocked the world, and bloodily purged the forces of Empress Wei and Princess Anle in one fell swoop. After the Tang Long coup, the imperial power of the empire was transferred to the hands of Li Dan, the prime minister, and Li Longji also won the position of the crown prince by virtue of the merit of Zhu Wei.

On June 27, Li Dan, who had ascended the throne and proclaimed emperor, officially announced that the third son of the emperor, Li Longji, the king of Ping, would be crowned the crown prince.

The reason why Li Dan did not adhere to the primogeniture inheritance system was to avoid the recurrence of the tragedy of the Xuanwumen Revolution in the Gaozu Dynasty, and directly set up Li Longji, the third son of the emperor who had made great contributions, as the crown prince in one step, so as to avoid the bloody conflict that might break out between the sons for the position of the prince.

But soon, Li Dan figured out one thing, the Xuanwumen Change, King Qin seemed to solve the contradiction between himself and the crown prince, but in fact solved the contradiction with Emperor Li Yuan:

King Qin is a military merit faction of the Tang Dynasty, and has made immortal contributions to the Tang Dynasty, which has reached the point where there is no reward, and has a large number of supporters in both temples and places, which seriously threatens the imperial power.

Why Li Yuan killed Liu Wenjing was actually a beating on King Qin. Including the failure to reward the Qinwang group in time after the destruction of Wang Shichong, and the sending of the crown prince to pacify Hebei when Liu Heimin rebelled for the second time, they were all suppression of the Qinwang group.

At that time, the crown prince was just a card for Emperor Li Yuan to balance the power of King Qin.

Therefore, during the Xuanwumen Change, the real battlefield of King Qin was actually in Taiji Palace, how to control his father and seize the military power and power of the Tang Dynasty. Of course, Li Shimin later got these things as he wished.

In other words, the premise of the success of the Xuanwumen Revolution was ostensibly the result of the Qin king's Wentao military strategy, but in essence, the Qin king understood what the main contradiction was and what the secondary contradiction was, which belonged to the victory of cognition and strategy.

Now, when Li Dan became the emperor, he immediately felt the chill that penetrated deep into the bone marrow on the throne, he had become the ancestor Li Yuan of the year, and the crown prince Li Longji was the king of Qin Shimin back then, the difference is only that Li Longji is the prince, not the prince. But the chill from the bottom up is the same.

In particular, when Li Longji controlled the power of the forbidden army and filled his own men into the center of the empire after the coup, Li Dan was even more stressed.

Therefore, Li Longji, who balances the heroes and the prince, is a card that Li Dan must play. Back then, Li Yuan could use the card of Jiancheng to balance the King of Qin, so Li Dan could also use the card of Princess Taiping of Zhenguo to suppress the East Palace.

That is, if you are not in your place, you will never be able to understand others.

On June 28, Li Dan appointed his eldest son Li Chengqi as the pastor of Yongzhou, controlled the Chang'an region of Beijing, and let Li Chengqi lead the governor of Yangzhou from afar, and control the money and soldiers in Jiangnan in his own hands. Subsequently, Li Chengqi also served as a stable envoy and controlled the military horses used by the forbidden army.

For Princess Taiping, Li Dan allowed her to continue to open the government and deeply participate in court politics. Through the two successful coups of Shenlong and Tanglong, Princess Taiping has accumulated enough prestige and strong strength in the empire, and is the best candidate to balance the prince's group.

Since then, Li Dan has been constantly playing balancing, when Princess Taiping is far ahead, he is appropriately biased to the side of the prince, and when the prince's pressure is too great, he is biased towards Taiping. In short, it was all for the stability of imperial power.

Li Dan's cleverness lies in the fact that although he is attacking the East Palace, he has never moved the idea of establishing a more prince, to put it bluntly, Princess Taiping is just a card for him to balance the East Palace.

In order to avoid the possible struggle caused by the change of imperial power behind him, Li Dan officially ceded the imperial throne to the crown prince Li Longji on the third day of August in the first year of Yanhe (712), and abdicated himself as the emperor.

But after the abdication, Li Dan did not give up his power, for example, he still called himself "I", and the orders he gave were called "He", and he had the right to appoint and dismiss officials above the third rank and the right to try major criminal cases, and he usually still worked in the Taiji Palace. However, after ascending the throne, Li Longji could only call himself "Yu", and the orders he issued were called "system" and "edict", and he had the right to appoint and dismiss officials below the fourth rank and the right to try cases below the prison sentence.

To put it bluntly, the supreme power is still in the hands of Ruizong, and Li Longji's power is almost the same as when he was the prince, but his identity has been transformed from the prince to the emperor, and it still belongs to the internship stage.

Li Dan is still afraid that his son will put him in the air, and he will become the ancestor Li Yuan of the year, and the suspicion of the Li Tang royal family can be seen from this.

Since then, Princess Taiping still acts as a key card for Li Dan to suppress Li Longji, and the two sides have launched a fierce battle in the military and political fields, and no one can completely suppress anyone: Taiping has repeatedly occupied the high ground of the prime minister's group and has a certain right to speak in the prime minister's team; Li Longji still controls the forbidden army.

One is leading in the political circle, the other is dominant in the military circle, and no one can help the other. This is exactly the result that Li Dan wants.

Everyone said that Princess Taiping had the ambition to copy the old path of Empress Wu Zetian, but in fact, she was just a card of the royal family from beginning to end: during the Shenlong coup, she was an ally of Li Xian and Li Dan, during the Tanglong coup, she was an ally of Li Longji, the king of Linzi, and now, she is just a card used by Emperor Li Dan to balance Li Longji.

It's always just a supporting role and a character to be used.

But this did not affect the Taiping's vigorous expansion of her power, by the second year of Xiantian (713), she already had the absolute right to speak in the political field, and five of the seven prime ministers at that time were her people, namely: Dou Huaizhen, Xiao Zhizhong, Cen Xi, Cui Xiang, and Lu Xiangxian. The remaining two are Ruizong's people.

However, Li Longji, the Son of Heaven, was isolated, just like the Qin King Shimin was as frightened when he faced the combined blows of Gaozu, the Crown Prince and the King of Qi.

Obviously, the situation has been out of balance, and Li Longji has frequently expressed his dissatisfaction in the case of an increasingly serious crisis, and the game between the two sides has entered a white-hot stage.

On June 24 of the second year of Xiantian (713), Li Dan recalled Guo Yuanzhen, the general manager of the Shuofang Army and the secretary of the military department, to the imperial court, and paid homage to the prime minister, wanting to use the external force of the Shuofang army to abolish the establishment. The reason why this is so is because the forbidden army is controlled by Emperor Li Longji, and Li Dan has to rely on external forces.

On the third day of the seventh month, Xuanzong led Li Lingwen, Wang Shouyi, Gao Lishi, Wang Maozhong and others to officially launch a coup d'état.

After entering the Xuanwu Gate, Xuanzong first killed Chang Yuankai, the general of the Left Yulin Wei of the North Gate Forbidden Army, and Li Ci, the general of the Zhiright Yulin, and then killed Jia Yingfu, the right scattered cavalry attendant on duty, and Li You, the middle scholar, on the west side of the Taiji Palace, and Xiao Zhizhong and Cui Xi were killed, and Dou Huaizhen committed suicide in the process of escaping.

Every time Xuanzong took a step forward, Taiping's henchmen fell one by one, and the princess may not know what was happening in the palace at this time.

In a panic, Ruizong hurriedly ran to Chengtianmen, preparing to summon the Southern Yajun to fight Xuanzong. However, because Xuanzong asked Wang Maozhong to go to the stables in the early stage of the coup d'état and seize the horses and arm the coup team, Ruizong could not win against Xuanzong in terms of time at all, and was finally trapped in the square inch of Chengtianmen.

The winners and losers are already in the know.

It can be seen that the advantage of the success of the congenital coup d'état Xuanzong is that he not only controlled the forbidden army, but also armed himself with war horses, which is enough to crush Ruizong in terms of military strength.

Ruizong could only give Xuanzong the legitimacy of the coup d'état when the defeat was decided, and handed over all the military and political power to the emperor Li Longji, who was as helpless as the ancestor Li Yuan back then. The transfer of power in Datang was completed in a coup d'état.

At this time, Princess Taiping could not pose any threat to Xuanzong when her henchmen were killed, and after hiding in the temple outside for a few days, she finally returned home and was killed by Xuanzong.

In essence, the death of Princess Taiping was actually Xuanzong's purge of the remnants of Ruizong's imperial power, or the contradiction between the prince and the imperial power.

Reviewing the success of Xuanzong, he, like Li Shimin, the king of Qin back then, only took action after confirming the main contradictions, and he did it before the opponent made a move: Li Shimin won the victory because he made a move before it was built, and Li Longji also won in one fell swoop by showing his sword the day before Taiping was ready to move.

It can be seen that in the case of equal strength, the grasp of the opponent's information and the speed of action are important factors that affect the result.

At this point, any forces that threatened the imperial power were purged, and Emperor Li Longji completely concentrated the imperial power, but this day was completed through several coups, from the Shenlong coup to the Jinglong coup, and then to the Tanglong coup, and finally ended with a congenital coup.

Once you succeed, your bones will wither, and there will be a price of blood behind you.

It can also be seen that Ruizong's attempt to complete the change of imperial power through a peaceful transition plan has been verified by reality to be infeasible.

Of course, even if Taiping wins, the imperial power will also be hollowed out, Princess Taiping can completely set up another emperor by her own will, and then control the overall situation by herself, just like the Xuanwumen change back then, if it is built to win, Li Yuan faces the same risk of becoming the emperor.

As long as there is a dominant power in the political arena, the imperial power will be challenged.

The safest plan for the emperor is to let the two families always play, but neither can completely suppress the other, but it is difficult to do this. Because, Taiping is essentially Ruizong's thug, Ruizong must ensure his own advantage, and Xuanzong will definitely take risks when his survival is challenged.

In essence, it is the special cultural genes of the Tang Dynasty that are at work, and it is the extreme distrust between the imperial power and the prince.

After that, this particular culture will create more royal tragedies.

The next tragedy is Xuanzong himself.
