Ayar Labs optical interconnect solutions that redefine AI infrastructure

author:The frontier of the AI era

Ayar Labs will be showcasing its latest technological advancements and ecosystem partnerships at the Optical Fiber Communications (OFC) Conference in San Diego from March 24-28, 2024.

Ayar Labs optical interconnect solutions that redefine AI infrastructure

Ayar Labs' optical I/O solutions will be showcased at the event, including a demonstration of the industry's first CW-WDM MSA-compliant 16-wavelength light source that can drive 256 optical carriers to achieve 16 Tbps bidirectional bandwidth – a level of bandwidth necessary for AI workloads.

Mark Wade, CEO and Co-Founder of Ayar Labs, said: "The explosion of AI models is breaking down bottlenecks in existing infrastructure – traditional interconnect technologies simply cannot meet the cost and throughput required for multimodal AI systems. "Our packaged optical I/O solutions provide customers with the performance and energy efficiency they need to build the next generation of AI infrastructure. We are excited to showcase this innovation with several of OFC's ecosystem partners. ”

As AI models increase in complexity and scale, traditional interconnect technologies create data bottlenecks that force GPUs and other accelerators to sit idle, limit compute performance, increase power consumption, and drive up costs. Ayar Labs' optical I/O solutions, including SuperNova light sources, eliminate these bottlenecks, enabling customers to maximize the computational efficiency and performance of their AI infrastructure while reducing costs, latency, and power consumption.

Just one year after introducing the industry's first 4Tbps optical solution, Ayar Labs now has the second generation of SuperNova, which powers the company's TeraPHY optical I/O chips and enables unmatched 16Tbps bidirectional bandwidth. Compliant with the CW-WDM MSA specification, the 16-wavelength light source offers a compact package with a wide operating temperature range and can provide optical load to 256 data channels, enabling it to handle the higher throughput required for massive growth in AI applications.

Ayar Labs will continue to integrate a robust ecosystem to simplify the integration of optical I/O with AI systems and ensure commercial readiness at scale. The company is working with several industry leaders to demonstrate the value that optical solutions provide for AI applications. Ayar Labs will highlight two examples at OFC:

Corning Glass Waveguide Module: Ayar Labs and Corning have collaborated to develop the next generation of artificial intelligence technology. By combining Ayar Labs' TeraPHY optical I/O chips with Corning's glass waveguide modules, they have created an optical-leading solution that brings advanced optical capabilities to the AI ecosystem. Ericsson is working with Ayar Labs and Corning to develop this AI-driven solution as part of their technological exploration of future mobile systems. This joint innovation will be showcased at the OFC booth at Ayar Labs. Together, they will highlight how these technologies can create future-proof AI innovations.

Teramount TeraVERSE Detachable Connectors: Teramount and Ayar Labs demonstrated the concept of a next-generation TeraVERSE detachable connector to meet the infrastructure needs of next-generation AI. Detachable fiber connectivity solutions feature broadband surface coupling, industry-leading bandwidth density, and detachability for reliable semiconductor-grade mass production of co-packaged optics and packaged optical I/O for AI. Broadband surface coupling provides high bandwidth density, negligible loss-dependent wavelength dependence, and requires fewer lasers, power, and fibers than grating coupler solutions.
