At the end of March 1943, Han Deqin, deputy commander-in-chief of the Kuomintang Lusu Theater and chairman of Jiangsu Province, was captured by the New Fourth Army in the Battle of Shanzitou.

But after the war, how to deal with Han Deqin became a problem, and at that time, Chen Yi made a strange suggestion to the central government, it was better to pretend not to know him, and let Han Deqin be mixed in the captives.

Since Han Deqin has already been captured, why should he be released? Moreover, why do you have to release him in this way by pretending not to know? The reason for this has to start from the beginning of that year.

The New Fourth Army captured the lieutenant general of the National Army, and Chen Yi asked the Central Committee: pretending not to know, mixed in the prisoners and released

One

Beginning in February 1943, the Central China Dispatch Army of the Japanese Army sent nearly 20,000 troops to carry out a large-scale "sweep" in northern Jiangsu.

At this time, it was the period of the alliance between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, and there were two teams stationed in northern Jiangsu, one was the Han Deqin Department of the National Army, and the other was the New Fourth Army.

But both are anti-Japanese, but the two teams are in different states.

In terms of the New Fourth Army, under the leadership of our party's North Jiangsu District Committee, the army and the people made concerted efforts to wage a desperate struggle against the Japanese puppet army, not only smashing the large-scale "sweeping" and "encroachment" of the Japanese and puppet armies on many occasions, but also consolidating and developing the anti-Japanese base areas in northern Jiangsu.

But on the other hand, on the side of the national army, it is a different situation.

At the beginning of the "sweep" of the Japanese puppet army, Han Deqin's troops almost collapsed at the touch of a button, and quickly retreated to the Huaihai area, so that the area under its original control was also lost.

If it was just a rout, it would be nothing, the problem was that he didn't think about how to turn defeat into victory, but instead started the idea of the New Fourth Army.

Soon after Han Deqin's defeat, he saw that the Japanese army was menacing, so he took the initiative to send a letter to the New Fourth Army, proposing the idea of moving to the area where the New Fourth Army was stationed.

In this regard, many people in the New Fourth Army disagreed, after all, Han Deqin's hands were stained with the blood of the officers and soldiers of the New Fourth Army, and besides, at that time, everyone could see that Han Deqin's move was not out of sincerity, but out of necessity.

However, in order to strive for the situation of unity and resistance in northern Jiangsu, the New Fourth Army still attached great importance to the general interests of the nation and showed great enthusiasm.

At that time, Huang Kecheng, political commissar of the 3rd Division of the New Fourth Army, was in charge of negotiations with Han Deqin, and after negotiations, the two sides reached several agreements, including "the two sides cooperate in operations" and "allow Han Deqin's department to transfer to the defense sites designated by the New Fourth Army." After the end of the Japanese "sweep", return to the original defense area" and so on.

After the agreement was reached, Huang Kecheng repeatedly explained that he must implement it in accordance with the agreement and cherish the cooperation situation, while Han Deqin said that he would definitely implement it as agreed, and even patted his chest and promised that he would do his best for the good cooperation between the two sides.

Subsequently, the main force of Han Deqin's department began to move to the defense area of the 3rd Division of the New Fourth Army, and although many officers and soldiers of the 3rd Division of the New Fourth Army did not understand this, after Huang Kecheng's ideological education work was carried out, everyone still cooperated very well to give up the defense ground for Han Deqin's department to rest and recuperate.

Not only that, the 3rd Division of the New Fourth Army sent supplies including grain, grass, ammunition and other materials to Han Deqin's department.

The New Fourth Army's move of attaching importance to the general interests of the nation not only won unanimous praise from all social strata at that time, but also made the officers and men of Han Deqin's department extremely grateful, because they really did not expect that the New Fourth Army would be willing to do this, and many people said that they should not have been enemies of the New Fourth Army in the past.

It can be said that the New Fourth Army was benevolent and righteous to Han Deqin's department at that time, but despite this, it still failed to exchange Han Deqin's sincerity.

On the one hand, while enjoying the protection brought by the New Fourth Army and the supplies provided, on the other hand, Han Deqin was secretly thinking about how to stab the New Fourth Army in the back.

In early March of that year, Wang Zhonglian's unit of the 31st Group Army of the Nationalist Army, which was stationed at the First National Army in Fuyang, Anhui Province, received a secret order from Chiang Kai-shek, asking it to attack the anti-Japanese base area of the New Fourth Army in Huaibei.

After receiving the order, Wang Zhonglian began to advance eastward, and at the same time, it coincided with the Japanese army intensifying its "sweeping" of the Yanfu area of northern Jiangsu of the New Fourth Army, which led to the New Fourth Army being attacked in many places at that time.

In this tricky situation, Han Deqin reached out with a black hand.

He led more than 4,000 troops from the 89th Army, the 6th Independent Brigade, and the 3rd Security Column to quickly advance westward and occupy the Renji and Chendaokou areas of Siyang County by way of surprise attack, taking advantage of the fact that the New Fourth Army was fully meeting the enemy.

Subsequently, he got carried away and continued to march westward, crossing the canal under the cover of night, and occupied the central area of the New Fourth Army's anti-Japanese base in Huaibei, that is, Qingyang Town, Shanzitou and other areas.

The purpose of his doing this was to form a situation of east-west attack with Wang Zhonglian's Ministry of the National Army, to take the Huaibei anti-Japanese base in one fell swoop, and then to plot the entire northern Jiangsu.

At this point, Han Deqin's true face was exposed, and after Chen Yi learned about it, he angrily scolded Han Deqin's move as "revenge".

You must know that not long ago, it was Chen Yi who agreed to Han Deqin's relocation to defend the New Fourth Army because of the expectation that the two sides would be able to cooperate in the long run, and although many comrades expressed concern about this, Chen Yi was still optimistic that through the influence of the New Fourth Army, the two sides would have "greater cooperation."

Now the cruel reality tells Chen Yi that not only did the expected cooperation not come, but the other party was still working behind his back, how could this not make him angry?

But being angry is angry, and now that Han Deqin has made it clear that he wants to commit a black hand against the New Fourth Army, the top priority is to think about how to deal with it quickly.

An emergency military meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chen Yi.

The New Fourth Army captured the lieutenant general of the National Army, and Chen Yi asked the Central Committee: pretending not to know, mixed in the prisoners and released

Two

At the meeting, Chen Yi first made self-criticism, and Deputy Army Commander Zhang Yunyi and Chief of Staff Lai Chuanzhu also said that the main responsibility did not lie with Chen Yi, but everyone despised Han Deqin's stubbornness, which caused the tense situation today.

Immediately afterwards, several people agreed that this time, Han Deqin must be taught a good lesson.

However, before teaching a lesson, adhering to the consistent purpose of our party, it is still necessary to persuade first, so Peng Xuefeng, commander of the 3rd Division of the New Fourth Army after receiving the order, negotiated with Han Deqin as a representative.

Things have come to this point, but the New Fourth Army still hopes that the two sides can cooperate sincerely to defend against the enemy, but unfortunately, Han Deqin chose to ignore this opportunity.

Since this is the case, there is no way for the New Fourth Army to do so, and after deployment, the military headquarters of the New Fourth Army made the decision to attack.

At that time, the situation was that Han Deqin intended to converge with Wang Zhonglian's troops to form an east-west flank situation, so the first task was to prevent the two armies from converging.

But whether to hit Wang Zhonglian or Han Deqin first has become a problem.

Theoretically speaking, the strategic goal of preventing the convergence of the enemy's two armies can be achieved by attacking either first, but compared with Wang Zhonglian's troops, the New Fourth Army is more familiar with Han Deqin's department, and it also has more common hatred for the enemy.

Therefore, the military headquarters of the New Fourth Army finally made a deployment, with the 4th Division as the main force, plus the 2nd Division and the 3rd Division to work together to annihilate Han Deqin's department.

The person in charge of the command of this campaign was Peng Xuefeng, commander of the 4th Division of the New Fourth Army, and he was holding back his anger as early as after he repeatedly persuaded Han Deqin to no avail, and now that the military department's order to annihilate the Han Department has been issued, it is natural to go all out to fight and teach this untrustworthy Han Deqin a good lesson.

Shanzitou is located in Sihong County on the northwest shore of Chengzi Lake in a soil hill, there were several villages on the gang at that time, and Han Deqin's department was entrenched here, and in order to facilitate command and his own safety, Han Deqin also deliberately set up the headquarters in a landlord's manor on the gangzi.

In order to win by surprise, on the side of the New Fourth Army, Peng Xuefeng ordered Wei Guoqing of the Ninth Brigade to hide in the area not far from Shanzitou, prepare to stay until night, and quickly launch an attack at night to defeat Han Deqin's command in one fell swoop.

But shortly after the troops set off as planned that night, a torrential downpour of rain suddenly came.

Rain and night, if this is placed in the eyes of ordinary people, it is an extremely unfavorable factor for the march, but in Wei Guoqing's eyes, it is a very rare opportunity.

Because of the heavy rain and the darkness of the night, it was able to cover the movement of the troops very well, and although there would be difficulties in rushing the troops, they invisibly ensured the concealment of the troops.

Second, heavy rain and night will also paralyze the enemy, because according to the unique thinking of the national army, where is there any reason for an emergency march in such bad weather?

And in the end, it turned out that this sudden heavy rain really made Han Deqin relax his vigilance.

On the night of the New Fourth Army's operation, Han Deqin saw the pouring rain, and his heart was a lot calmer, and he was also worried about whether the New Fourth Army would make a surprise attack, but when he saw the heavy rain, he thought that in such weather, the New Fourth Army would not be able to suffer from running around, and there was a high probability that it would not come.

And as long as the New Fourth Army does not come, after staying up all night, Wang Zhonglian's troops will almost arrive the next day, and by that time, he will eat the main force of the New Fourth Army and then recapture northern Jiangsu.

Thinking of this, Han Deqin fell asleep peacefully, and at the same time, his sentry also relaxed his vigilance because of the heavy rain, after all, in the sentry's opinion, the rain was so heavy that the ghosts were unwilling to come out, and as for the New Fourth Army, it was even more impossible.

So, in the middle of the night, the sentry simply hid in his room and began to fall asleep.

At this time, Wei Guoqing's Ninth Brigade had already arrived at Shanzitou, Han Deqin's headquarters was also close at hand, and more importantly, the enemy did not notice their arrival at all.

A big war, on the verge of breaking out.

The New Fourth Army captured the lieutenant general of the National Army, and Chen Yi asked the Central Committee: pretending not to know, mixed in the prisoners and released

Three

After arriving at Shanzitou, Wei Guoqing and the soldiers ignored the rain on their bodies and the mud under their feet, and quietly hid in their predetermined positions, waiting for the general attack order to be issued.

Finally, in the middle of the night, I saw that the rain had subsided, and two signal flares hit the sky, which marked the official start of the battle to besiege Han Deqin.

Immediately afterwards, Wei Guoqing arranged for the Ninth Brigade to attack Han Deqin's headquarters in the form of a flanking attack from the north and south, and at the same time, the rest of the participating troops of the New Fourth Army also rushed towards the rest of the enemy forces in accordance with the pre-deployment.

Because the New Fourth Army launched a sudden attack, and the national army was basically defenseless, and even many people were still asleep, therefore, all the enemy strongholds outside Han Deqin's headquarters were uprooted at dawn, and at this time, Wei Guoqing also led his troops to surround the landlord's manor.

The violent gunfire made Han Deqin wake up from his sleep a long time ago, but he was still lucky at the beginning and tried to resist stubbornly, so as to wait for dawn Wang Zhonglian's troops to come to the rescue.

But as the outlying strongholds were uprooted by the New Fourth Army one by one, Han Deqin finally had to admit that this time he was afraid that it would be difficult to fly.

In the end, on the morning of March 18, 1943, Han Deqin's troops were completely annihilated, and Wang Zhonglian, who had already marched to the Lingbi area at this time, after learning of Han Deqin's defeat, immediately turned around and retreated to the west of Jinpu Road without saying a word.

Han Deqin himself was captured by the New Fourth Army in this battle.

But when the prisoners were counted after the war, something strange happened, and at that time, Chen Yi made such a suggestion to Yan'an about how to deal with Han Deqin:

Pretend not to recognize Han Deqin, and let him go among ordinary captives.

Since Han Deqin was captured alive, why did he release him instead? And he was released in the way of "not knowing him", why is this?

In fact, this was all due to the situation at the time.

After Han Deqin became chairman of Jiangsu Province, he did have many conflicts with the New Fourth Army, but no matter what he said, after all, he was a general of the Nationalist Army and chairman of Jiangsu Province, and it would be easy to kill him, but in this way, Chiang Kai-shek would take this opportunity to turn his face and then openly sabotage the cooperation agreement between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party.

Therefore, in line with the purpose of not giving people a handle, Chiang Kai-shek could not find an excuse to turn his face, so he could not directly kill Han Deqin.

On the contrary, if he is not killed, he is still the chairman of Jiangsu Province, after the first battle of Shanzitou, his main force was basically defeated by the New Fourth Army, and there is no longer the capital and strength to be the enemy of the New Fourth Army, so Han Deqin has no need to kill him.

More importantly, at that time, the New Fourth Army learned through special channels that Chiang Kai-shek had always had the idea of letting Tang Enbo replace Han Deqin, and once the New Fourth Army really killed Han Deqin, then Tang Enbo would inevitably take up Jiangsu, and at the same time, Tang Enbo's main force would follow, and at that time, the situation of our New Fourth Army in Central China would be extremely unfavorable.

Based on this, Chen Yi suggested that Han Deqin be released, as for why he pretended not to know, it was very simple, that is, to avoid making Chiang Kai-shek suspicious, so that Han Deqin's position as chairman of Jiangsu Province would be stable.

But when it came time to release the captives, a situation that Chen Yi did not expect happened.

The New Fourth Army captured the lieutenant general of the National Army, and Chen Yi asked the Central Committee: pretending not to know, mixed in the prisoners and released

Four

On the day when the New Fourth Army released the prisoners, the other prisoners left in an orderly manner, but when it was Han Deqin's turn, he not only refused to leave, but took the initiative to reveal his identity, and shouted that he must see Chen Yi.

At this time, the soldier in charge is also quite confused.

When the news came, Chen Yi was even more puzzled, why didn't he leave even more when he was asked to go? Originally, Chen Yi didn't want to see Han Deqin, so as not to cause trouble, but at Deng Zihui's suggestion, Chen Yi finally agreed to go to Han to see what tricks he was going to play.

After that, Chen Yi reported to Yan'an in detail about the situation of preparing to meet with Han Deqin and what advantages Han Deqin had for the New Fourth Army in northern Jiangsu, and soon Yan'an made a clear reply:

"Agree with Chen's proposed approach to dealing with the Korean issue... If Chen estimates that it is more advantageous for Han to stay in northern Jiangsu, he can make Han stay in northern Jiangsu, but in any case, remember to be cautious and not to be fooled. ”

The meaning of Yan'an's reply is very simple, that is, to agree with Chen Yi's idea of letting Han Deqin go and ensuring that he continues to serve as the chairman of Jiangsu Province, and at the same time reminded Chen Yi that he must be cautious and not fall for Han Deqin again.

In this way, Chen Yi and Han Deqin, two old rivals who have fought for many years, finally met at the military headquarters of the New Fourth Army.

After the two met, Han Deqin's face was full of shame, and his attitude was humble to the extreme, and he repeatedly mentioned that he was captured three times, all of which were defeated by Chen Yi.

In the end, Han Deqin couldn't help but burst into tears, saying that this third time he was captured, he was wiped out by the whole army, and he had no face to see anyone.

Although Han Deqin was sincere, Chen Yi was very calm, he told Han Deqin that on the eve of this battle, he had sent people to try to communicate with Han Deqin many times in order to avoid fighting, but Han Deqin never listened, and finally did something to make "relatives and enemies happy".

Speaking of which, Han Deqin's face was also red and white for a while, and he was ashamed.

After that, Chen Yi's tone softened a little, and he told Han Deqin that unity in the War of Resistance was the basic proposition of the Communist Party, so although Han Deqin's department was completely annihilated, in line with the original intention of uniting to resist Japan, the Communist Party would still let Han Deqin live.

And this is exactly the result that Han Deqin wants.

Although the soldiers of the New Fourth Army let him go, he was worried that as soon as he left the door of the New Fourth Army, he might be accidentally "killed", and it was because of this that he wanted to see Chen Yi and get Chen Yi's personal guarantee.

Now, with Chen Yi's personal promise, Han Deqin knows that his life is worry-free.

After confirming that his life was worry-free, Han Deqin rubbed his hands excitedly, and after a long time, he made several requests to Chen Yi in a very embarrassed tone.

There are two of them.

First of all, Han Deqin proposed that while letting him go this time, he could not let him go alone, and he had to return some of his people and guns;

Secondly, since Han Deqin was completely annihilated this time, there is no place for him, so the New Fourth Army needs to set aside a place for Han Deqin to garrison.

While making a request, Han Deqin observed Chen Yi's face while speaking, because he also knew that his requests seemed quite excessive, so if he didn't keep it, he would make Chen Yi angry.

But seeing Chen Yi's calm face, this made Han Deqin feel a lot more at ease, and in the end, he had the courage to mention that his requirements were actually "for the good of the New Fourth Army".

For this reason, he explained that as long as he could not leave the New Fourth Army alone, then Lao Jiang would not doubt it, and if Lao Jiang did not doubt it, he would naturally not send someone to take his place, and his willingness to no longer be an enemy of the New Fourth Army would naturally be extremely beneficial to the New Fourth Army.

Han Deqin's words are actually the result that Chen Yi wants.

After the conversation, Chen Yi quickly summoned Peng Xuefeng and Deng Zihui, and several people finally agreed to report the content of the meeting between the two to the central government.

After reading the report, Chairman Mao quickly made a reply, "agreeing to the conditions for the release of South Korea".

On April 1, 1943, Peng Xuefeng, as a representative of the New Fourth Army, and Lu Hanjin, a representative of Han Deqin, signed the "Ten Articles of Memorandum of Understanding between Commander Chen Yi of the New Fourth Army and Deputy Commander-in-Chief Han Deqin", in which the specific terms of future cooperation between the two sides were described in detail.

It is worth noting that Article 10 of this memorandum reads that "both parties shall keep this clause absolutely confidential, and neither party shall unilaterally scrap or disclose it without the consent of both parties".

After the agreement was signed, Chen Yi held a banquet at the division headquarters of the 4th Division of the New Fourth Army to present Han Deqin.

During the banquet, after discussion with Peng Xuefeng and others, Chen Yi finally decided to designate a township in Huaibei as Han Deqin's station.

Chen Yi replied, "In the first 40 years, the New Fourth Army entered northern Jiangsu, and there was not even a foothold, but you Han Deqin was reluctant to give a village, and now we are a township, which is much more atmospheric than you."

What Chen Yi said is indeed the truth, and Han Deqin has nothing to say, at least there is a hometown to settle in, which is better than nothing.

The New Fourth Army captured the lieutenant general of the National Army, and Chen Yi asked the Central Committee: pretending not to know, mixed in the prisoners and released

After the banquet, the headquarters of the 4th Division of the New Fourth Army returned more than 400 people and more than 300 guns to Han Deqin in accordance with Chen Yi's instructions, and also returned his radio station to him.

Han Deqin was extremely grateful for this, and immediately said that there would never be any more friction with the New Fourth Army.

In the end, under the escort of the 4th Division Cavalry Brigade, Han Deqin went to the designated area to garrison, and since then, he has been like a different person, and has never backtracked, but often reported the deployment of the national army to the New Fourth Army, and with his cooperation, the Suzhou-Anhui border area has gradually grown.
