The Pakaal Residence is a building with a rich history, its initial construction dates back to the early 20th century. It is located in Santiago, one of the most important streets in the city of Mérida, Mexico, and one of the oldest neighborhoods in the region.

▼ Project Overview

Upon entering this 350-square-metre residence, the first thing that catches your eye is the 5-metre high ceilings and original wooden beams and joists in the living room, where paintings by Pedro Friedberg are displayed. The flooring was specially designed by the architect for this project, with three different tiles creating a unique floor pattern. The living room is the only part of the project that has been completely restored, while in the following sections, the architect has made a more modern intervention in the space.

The second part of the home includes covered service spaces and an open-air water garden with a stone-paved path floating above the water. On the site of this waterscape garden used to be a small house with a French tile roof. The demolition of the building left behind an old load-bearing wall and damp stains on the wall.

Crossing the "stone bridge", you will come to a small garden with a covered terrace that connects to the kitchen. In these areas of the residence, the architects decided to respect the traces of history and skillfully combine the original structure of the building with new materials and building systems. The design is based on old masonry walls, with a metal "I" beam frame for its new roof structure, and a roof finish with chukum, a traditional Mexican material.

The interior walls of the kitchen retain the original material finishes as a tangible testimony to the passage of time and contrast with the modern design of the custom kitchen and the bright colors of the spaghetti tile floors. Large tempered glass doors fixed to old wooden frames open the space and allow the kitchen to connect to the outdoor terrace, which is undoubtedly the heart of the Pakaal home.

The aesthetic and structural standards of the kitchen were also applied to the terrace area, where the architects retained the original stone walls and echoed the walls with stone floors in neutral tones. This area serves as an outdoor kitchen and dining room, with a wood-fired pizza oven and barbecue grill, making it an ideal place for home entertaining. This relaxing atmosphere is further enhanced by the beautiful views of the garden and the chukum pool, with decks made of Tzalam wood floating on the water and sunlight casting beautiful light and shadows on the deck through the leaves of the lime trees (Pak'áal in Mayan).

The private area at the rear of the residence has been designed to protect the existing vegetation in the site. So the five bedrooms, including the master bedroom, are spread out along the plot around the trees. The massing of this area is more sober and pure, like five cubes shaped from different materials, such as the master bedroom, where the first cube is made of chukum, the second is made of mortar and broken clay tiles, and the third is made of stone. The guest area is the only two-storey area in the entire house, with glass and chukum materials, and a staircase between the two guest volumes as a guiding axis, leading the eye to the kapok tree in the back garden.

▼The relationship between the bedroom and the outdoor landscape

In the master bedroom, the occupants have a direct view of the swimming pool and the century-old Ramón tree. To echo the outdoor landscape, the master bedroom floor tiles are greenish-blue to mimic the colour of the pool water and foliage, and to bring nature inside. The master bathroom not only features a bathtub placed on the wooden deck, but also connects directly to the outdoor private garden.

The interior design, designed by Workshop in collaboration with Artesano, aims to blend past and present, creating a balance between the natural and built environment, while combining traditional and modern materials into the overall architectural space. It can be said that the design of Pakaal Residences respects history, nature and its context, creating a different environment and atmosphere for each space.
