Well, you know

How did the custom of "welcoming the God of Wealth" come about?

How many gods of wealth are there?

A few days ago, Professor Huang Jingchun of the Department of Chinese, School of Liberal Arts, Shanghai University

and Zhang Bo, a researcher at the Institute of Beijing Studies of Beijing Union University

Explain this in an exclusive interview

1. How did the custom of "welcoming the God of Wealth" come about?

Chinese folk belief in the God of Wealth can be traced back to the Song Dynasty. At the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, during the Jingkang Change, Meng Yuanlao left Tokyo to live in Lin'an (Hangzhou), and wrote the book "Tokyo Menghualu" in his later years, reminiscing about the prosperity of Tokyo. In this book, Elder Meng describes how every household went to the street to buy "Cai Ma" (i.e., the statue of the God of Wealth) before the Chinese New Year. The god of wealth at this time did not have a clear name, but was simply a god for people to pray for wealth.

The record of "welcoming the God of Wealth" on the fifth day of the first month can be found in Feng Menglong's novel collection "Warning the World" in the Ming Dynasty: "On the fifth day of the first month, the custom of Suzhou is that every household in Japan sacrifices to the god of the five roads, which is called the burning of the city. "The local chronicles of the late Ming Dynasty also have records of receiving the God of Wealth on the fifth day of the first lunar month.

2. Why is it called "Breaking Five" in northern China?

Liu Zhongyu, a professor at East China Normal University, once compared the "Breaking Five" in the north with the "God of Wealth" in the south. People in both the North and the South have great hopes for a better life, but their attitudes and practices are different.

The ancients believed that there were many taboos during the New Year, and on the fifth day of the first month, people believed that after the New Year, they would start working in the fields. Therefore, the fifth day of the first lunar month also means that the taboo is "sent away". Sending away all kinds of taboos and sending the "poor" out of the house is the main content of "Breaking Five". In the old days, many areas in the north continued the tradition of agrarian society, so "sending the poor" was the main tone on the fifth day of the first lunar month.

3. How was the image of the God of Wealth established?

During the Song and Song dynasties, people would buy "Cai Ma" and post them at home. "Wealth Horse" is the portrait of the God of Wealth. No specific depiction of the image of the God of Wealth has been left from this period.

In the Yuan Dynasty, the god of blessing began to appear, also known as the star king of wealth. There are four Yuan miscellaneous dramas that write about the God of Fortune, and some directly call it the "God of Wealth", but each has a different name and origin. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the belief in the God of Wealth had spread to North China, and some local chronicles also recorded the temple fairs of the God of Wealth.

In addition to blessing the God of Wealth, Zhao Gongming and Wutong God all have the function of God of Wealth. From the Yuan Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty, worshipping the "Five Gods" gradually became popular. The source of the five gods was in India and later introduced to China. Since the Tang Dynasty, legends and beliefs of the five gods have begun to appear.

There are many different names for Wutong God, such as Wuxian God, Five Holy Spirit, Five Rampant God, Wulu God, Huaguang, Ma Lingguan, etc. Legend has it that the gods of the Five Paths bring money, but it is often stolen from elsewhere. In the eyes of Confucianism, this violated Confucian ethics and corrupted the social atmosphere.

Confucian scholars pushed the government to launch several campaigns to ban and destroy the five links. Under this kind of social pressure, Wutong God changed its name and also transformed into a "godhead". So, the five-way God of Wealth appeared. In the spread of the God of Wealth of the Five Roads, the interpretation of the "Five Roads" has also evolved the connotation of the "Five Elements of Righteousness" and the beautiful vision of "the east, the west, the south, the north, and the middle are all rich". The God of Wealth retains the function of giving wealth to the God of Five Paths, and adds the ethical connotation of loyalty, filial piety, fairness, and justice. After hundreds of years of transformation, his image broke out of the dilemma of anti-ethics and anti-society, and completed the name change and the perfection of the godhead with the image of the Wulu God of Wealth, which was also accepted by all walks of life.

As a giver and protector of wealth

The God of Wealth is a symbol of wealth

It is also a representation of wisdom, opportunity and success

It entrusts the people's yearning for a better life

I wish you all a prosperous and happy life!
