William Holman Hunt (1827~1910) was an English painter and one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelites. Born on April 2, 1827 in Chipside, his father was a shopkeeper and did not want Hunt to learn to paint. So Hunt didn't come into contact with oil painting until he was sixteen years old, when he made a living by painting portraits and began to study painting. Hunt often imitated the works of his predecessors, such as some famous Italian paintings of the 15th century, and these studies played an important role in his life. In 1845 he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he met Millais and Rossetti. Together, they founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, determined to revive the British art scene. His main works include: "Awakening of Conscience", "Shepherd", "Images of Death", "Light of the World", etc.

It was the first Victorian painting depicting the problem of prostitution. A mistress who was kept in custody was playing the piano and playing music with the children of a rich family, and her conscience was suddenly awakened by the bright and solemn sunlight outside the window.

Once, he drew a fly on the window, which made the manager mistakenly believe that it was true, which shows the high level of his painting skills. It wasn't until Hunter was able to make a living by painting portraits that his parents stopped objecting to him learning to paint. At the age of 17, he became an auditor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and often visited the National Gallery to copy masterpieces. After getting acquainted with Millais, he studied under Brown for 4 months. In 1847, the British critic Ruskin proposed that painters should "go back to nature", a slogan that was very popular with the young painters Hunt, Millais and Rossetti, who united in like-mindedness and formally challenged academic art under the name of the "Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood". They broke up after holding three exhibitions under this name.
At the age of 27, Hunt traveled to Egypt and Palestine and later to Jerusalem, where he died on September 7, 1910. Hunt's art is based on sketching, and the attention to detail in his work is also a symbolic feature of the German Nazarene, so some people consider Pre-Raphaelite art to be the prelude to European symbolism. Hunt's works are characterized by their ability to explore the mysteries of the human mind and express the national spirit, often drawing on the Bible and literature, especially Shakespeare's works. Among the Pre-Raphaelite painters, Hunt was an honest and reliable elder.
