Guide

Wang Duo, the most representative figure in the calligraphy field in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, his calligraphy art was not only admired by later generations for its unique style, but also his concept of calligraphy creation also provided a profound influence for later generations. Wang Duo knows that calligraphy is not only the skill of pen and ink, but also the incisive collision of thoughts, emotions and spirit.

In Wang Duo's view, to write a good calligraphy work, you first need to have a complete structure in mind, and this structure does not mean to rest on your laurels or remain immutable. When the pen is really moving, only by accumulating a deep calligraphy foundation can the pen and ink follow the trend and express an art form that transcends the conventional and is free. This requires not only a calligrapher to have a profound artistic accomplishment, but also the courage to break the rules.

Wang Duo's vertical scrolls are particularly eye-catching, and they have undoubtedly become a highlight of his calligraphy art. The reason why these works are particularly outstanding is due to Wang Duo's profound study of the objects he copied, and his mastery and application of the brush, knots, and chapters. On the basis of mastering traditional techniques, he dares to go with the flow and vividly express his personal aesthetic taste and artistic pursuit.

When Wang Duo was young, he often tried to be accurate in copying ancient famous posters, like a young child learning to be a toddler and deliberately follow. However, as he grew older and improved his artistic cultivation, his concept changed dramatically. He began to pay more attention to understanding the spiritual realm of the ancients through copying, rather than simply imitating the external forms of brush and ink. He uses copying as a means of self-expression, looking for innovation in imitation and maintaining individuality in inheritance.

This does not mean that Wang Duo is disrespectful to tradition, on the contrary, he has gained the ability to create with ease through in-depth study and understanding of tradition. He regards the ancient Dharma as the starting point for his creation, but he never sees the model as a shackle that limits his imagination and creativity. This deep understanding of calligraphy is the key to Wang Duo's ability to create works full of vitality.

On the road of calligraphy art, Wang Duo is the pioneer who dares to take the first step, step out of the convention, and find his own artistic expression. His works, which seem to be casual and uninhibited on the surface, are in fact the natural outpouring of inner skills, and the exploration of the limits of the art of calligraphy. Some people commented that Wang Duo was the master of the Ming Dynasty calligraphy, correcting the mistakes of Zhao and Dong Moliu.
