At the Lushan Conference in 1959, Huang Kecheng, chief of the General Staff, was also criticized, in fact, he was not very wrong, the main reason was that he had too close a relationship with Mr. Peng.
At the meeting, some people said that because Mr. Peng saved Huang Kecheng's life. Huang Kecheng repaid his kindness, so he followed Mr. Peng so closely.
Mr. Peng did save Huang Kecheng's life, but he didn't tell Huang Kecheng. Huang Kecheng never knew about it.
In this regard, Peng Dehuai later wrote in his autobiography:
"In the winter of 1931, when I went to Ruijin to attend the First Soviet Congress, Comrade Yuan Guoping (then director of the Political Department of the Third Army Corps) dismissed Comrade Huang Kecheng from his post as political commissar of the division in the name of transfer, saying that Huang was a right-leaning opportunist and a member of Chen Duxiu's (cancelled) faction, and that he was ready to be executed.
When I returned to the corps headquarters, I (then the former party secretary) was adamantly opposed to this approach. I don't think opportunism can be treated like a counter-revolution. After discussion, it was decided to reinstate Huang Kecheng as the political commissar of the Third Division. I have never told any comrade about this matter, nor have I mentioned it to Huang himself. It wasn't until the Lushan meeting, when Huang said that he had saved my life, that I knew that Huang already knew about it. ”
Indeed, Huang Kecheng did not know about this matter, and decades later, Huang Kecheng talked about this matter in his memoirs, and finally said:
"Actually, before the Lushan meeting, I and the Anti-Counterterrorism Committee had no idea about the circumstances of Peng Dehuai's release due to Peng Dehuai's intervention, no one else told me, and Peng Dehuai never talked to me about it. It wasn't until the Lushan meeting criticized me and brought about this incident that I learned what happened in the first place. ”
