Before and after Han Fuyu was killed - Liu Xizhong

author:Deep learning and thinking

(a)

I have a historical relationship with Han Fuyu and other high-level personnel. After graduating from the Beiyang School of Law and Politics in 1921, I went to work in Feng Yuxiang's army, and was transferred from secretary and military judge to tax administration, which was deeply appreciated by Feng Yuxiang. Han Fuyu and I are related, so the relationship is closer. In 1929, when Han rebelled against Feng and defected to Chiang, I was serving as the deputy director of the Henan Provincial Anti-Smoking Inspection Department (the director was Fu Zhengshun, the director of the Department of Finance, and I was actually responsible), and Han Hui Kaifeng was appointed chairman of the Henan Provincial Government, leaving me to succeed in the work. In 1930, I became the head of Han's office in Beiping, responsible for liaison with Yan Xishan.

After Han became the chairman of the Shandong Provincial Government, he appointed me as the director of the Shandong Provincial Cattle Licensing Administration, handling tax work, and often running outside on his behalf to engage in some political activities. After Zhang Xueliang entered the customs, I contacted him on his behalf, and Zhang and Han became brothers. When Song Zheyuan was in charge of the affairs of North China, I also kept in contact, and Han and Song met at Song's home in Leling to discuss important issues between the two sides. He also maintained a certain amount of contact with Feng Yuxiang, in addition to ensuring his safety, and helping his living expenses from time to time.

After Han expelled Liu Zhennian, the province's automobile traffic was unified, and I was transferred to serve as the deputy director of the transportation department of the Third Route Army and the director of the Shandong Provincial Automobile and Road Management Bureau, in charge of the province's automobile traffic business. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Automobile Road Administration Bureau was reorganized into the Automobile Corps of the Third Route Army, with me as the commander, and ordered all trucks to be modified with steel plates and used as armored vehicles for combat and military transportation tasks.

Before the ROK withdrew from Jinan, the Automobile Corps was ordered to move to Guide in Henan Province to conduct military reorganization training, and some of the cars were already equipped with steel plates. Although I am stationed in Guide, I am still very concerned about all the developments of Han and the Third Route Army.

One day, I suddenly received a telegram from Xuzhou from my old friend Zhao Yusong, a representative of the Sichuan Army, saying that he had taken a train to Hankou by train to Hankou one day, and invited me to wait at the station for a meeting. He said, "Do you know that Chairman Han and Commander Li have fallen out?" I said, "I don't know, what's going on?" He said: "I don't know the details, but I have heard that your chairman has several telegrams that are unceremonious to Chief Lee.

Li was annoyed and reported Han's disobedience to orders and disobedience to orders to the chairman of the committee. I heard that Chiang is going to hold a military conference in Kaifeng to solve this problem, and it is best to ask your chairman to prepare well and fight this lawsuit. I asked Han what telegrams he had made, and Zhao said, "I have only heard rumors from everyone that his telegrams are very inconsiderate in terms of wording and tone." Commander Li believed that he had no commander in sight, and if he was not punished, he would not be able to command operations in the future. You'll find out if you go back and check the telegrams. "Zhao Yusong is an adviser to Deng Xihou of the Sichuan Army, and he often travels outside, going back and forth between Beiping and Jinan, and he knows me very well, so he told me the news.

I deeply felt his kindness, and I left him to get out of the car and go to Cao County to meet Han (Han's home was in Cao County at that time). He said that Hankou had important matters for him to solve, and he could not stop halfway.

Immediately after Zhao left, I went to Cao County to meet Han and report on the situation I had discussed with Zhao. After hearing this, Han was silent for a while, and then called someone to go to the staff office to fetch the telegram that had recently exchanged with Li. I opened it and looked, and sure enough, some of the words and sentences were really stiff, and these words and sentences were all approved by Han on the call, and the staff office took out these words intact. Han didn't want to admit his mistake, but said, "Mr. Zhao, you go to thank you." Li Zongren wants to fight a lawsuit, so let's fight!" I tried my best to persuade Han and said: "The people are the chiefs, and we are under the command of the others, put yourself in your shoes, if you are the chief, what will happen? Or send someone to explain and explain, won't the lawsuit be easy to fight?" Han pondered for a moment and said, "Okay! You can go and explain on my behalf!"

I immediately turned back to Germany and waited for the train to Xu, but unexpectedly, the railway was busy with military transportation in those days, and the passenger cars stopped. I was about to take a military bus to the station, when suddenly someone came to the station and said that Chief Li's special car was going west, so I hurried to the station to meet me. When Li's special car arrived at the station, I got on the bus and told him that Han had sent me to Xu to meet him and was waiting for the bus. Li Zongren was very polite, he said: "I have received a telegram from Chairman Han, saying that Brother Xi is coming, so let's talk!"

I said, "Chairman Han asked me to greet the commander and report on the situation of the troops and ask for instructions on what to do in the future. Li didn't say a word at the time, just listened with a very serious attitude. I then reported on the movements of the Third Route Army and asked him for instructions on what to do next. Lee said, "What are you going to do?" and I said, "I'd better listen to the orders of the chief." The previous time he ordered the Third Route Army to withdraw to the Yimeng Mountains, Chairman Han temporarily changed the plan on the grounds that he had not made any preparations in the Yimeng Mountains. Under the enemy's tracking, although you can't go at the moment, you can still go in the future, and even if you can't go all of them, you can go some. ”

Lee listened to my words and said nothing. After a pause, I said, "I heard that there are two telegrams that have made the chief very angry. Chairman Han is a person that the chief still doesn't understand, he has always been so-so, he is so busy with things, many things are handed over to his subordinates to handle, and he doesn't even read telegrams. The day before yesterday, we checked the telegrams, and they were all sent by the General Staff Office. Chairman Han is pursuing this responsibility and is ready to give the undertaker the punishment he deserves. Of course, such an important telegram was casually handed over to the next to deal with, and he himself could not escape the blame. Chairman Han said that he would come to the chief in a few days to ask him for a lesson. ”

I said a lot at the time, and it was just a big idea. When Li listened to me, he sometimes smiled coldly, but his expression was still serious, contrary to his usual amiable attitude. In the end, he said: "I will go to Kaifeng now, and I hope that the Xi brothers will come to talk often, and we will talk about it when we meet in the future!" Because the train has been loaded with coal water and ready to open, it only lasted more than half an hour. After my resignation, I always felt that my words had no effect, and Lee never said a word of understanding. My heart is still heavy.

After Li's car drove away, I rushed to Cao County that night to meet Han and report on the situation of seeing Li. Han actually said that he didn't care, but I was very worried and went to Zhang Shaotang to discuss. Zhang said that the notice to convene a meeting in Kaifeng had arrived, and Han had decided to attend. I went to see Han again and asked him if he was attending the meeting, and he said he was going to go.

I said: "According to what I have seen in Chief Li's expression, the Kaifeng meeting may not be good for us, and it is better for the chairman not to go, and there is room for buffer by sending a representative." Han said, "I've already called back and said that I will be there on time, so how can I not go?" I said, "You can take a temporary sick leave." Han said, "Don't be nervous. If I don't go, it's even more suspicious. I didn't surrender to Japan, what are you afraid of?"

I didn't think at that time that Han had been deceived by Jiang Bocheng, and always thought that he had not taken refuge in Japan, and that with Jiang Bocheng as a witness, he was justified and was not afraid of anything, and he did not think about other aspects at all. And how could I win Chiang Kai-shek's eyes and ears because I had campaigned for Han and fought against Chiang Kai-shek for many years, especially the "Double Twelve" incident and my union with Liu Xiang? Han still smiled and said: "During this Anti-Japanese War, the chairman of the committee convened a military meeting, there is no reason not to go, you have too many concerns. I said, "I always think it's better to be cautious." Han became a little impatient, and even said, "Good, good, good!" Then, he diverted the topic and asked me about the automobile corps, told me to step up training, and asked how the armored vehicles were assembled. In this way, it is inconvenient for me to go on and on. The next morning, I returned to Germany, and before leaving, I asked Zhang Shaotang and Wang Xiangrong to try to persuade Han not to go.

Not long after I arrived in Guide, I received a call from Zhang Shaotang, saying that Han was scheduled to transfer from Liuhe to Kaifeng by train on a certain day. Zhang Shaotang said that they couldn't persuade him, and the special car had been prepared, so I would go to Liuhe to see off Han, and I would talk about it in person if I had something to say. I ran to Liuhe again, and when no one else was present, I again persuaded him to send a representative. Han didn't listen, and finally went to Kaifeng with his attaché and many guards.

When I returned to Guide, I was always worried about Han's safety. Two days later, the director of the Guide Telegraph Bureau said to me: "Something happened to Chairman Han in Kaifeng, right? Why don't you give us a call and ask. "I immediately hung up the phone and asked Zhang Shaotang. He said: "Yes, the chairman was detained in Kaifeng, and he was about to tell you, come quickly!" I didn't eat, so I rushed to Cao County. At this time, Sun Tongxuan had returned to Cao County, and immediately asked him about Han's detention, and knew that Han had been sent to Hankou on the day he was detained.

I first said to Sun: "Now that the chairman has had an accident, our automobile corps will be under your command from now on." Sun was very happy, and I immediately raised the question of how to save Han. Sun said: "Now we are inviting everyone to discuss this matter, and I invite the Xi brothers to participate." There were many people who participated in the discussion, including Li Shuchun, Wang Xiangrong, Zhang Shaotang, etc., on the provincial side, Liu Shuxiang, Zhang Yue, and several division chiefs on the headquarters side, and Sun Tongxuan, Cao Fulin, and Wu Huawen leading troops. At that time, I can't remember the details of everyone's speeches accurately, but I remember that the personnel of the provincial government and the headquarters were worried about Han's safety, and their hearts were very heavy. Several troop leaders discussed the changes that would take place in the Third Route Army in the future.

Cao Fulin complained that Han's left and right should not have allowed the chairman to go to the meeting in the first place. As for how to try to rescue, they didn't come up with a good solution. Zhang Shaotang proposed that people should be sent to Hankou immediately to inquire about Han's situation and try to rescue him. In the end, I unanimously pushed me to go, and I was duty-bound, agreed to go, returned to Germany immediately, handed over the affairs of the regiment to Li Tiemin's regiment, and then took a ride to Han.

I went to Hankou and stayed in the office of the Third Route Army. According to Director Wang Kairu, Han was detained in Chiang's camp building, and he was still given preferential food and lodging, but he was not allowed to meet with outsiders, and it was not clear what the other situation was. He was feeling helpless and asked me what to do. I said, "I'm very unfamiliar with the situation, I just know Mr. Feng (Yuxiang) and Mr. Lu (Zhong Lin), what do you think of other aspects?" Wang said: "I can't help anything else, I can only inquire about the news, but I can't get the real situation, and now I can only look for the two of them." ”

I went to see Feng Yuxiang first, and after the meeting, I first talked about the situation of Han's detention this time, and talked about how Han's various practices were wrong, mainly to explain the situation when Feng went to the Sixth War Zone. In the end, I said, "In any case, he was raised by Mr. Wang, and I have to ask you to find a way to save him." Feng said, "Don't talk about that. Now the question is how to save his life, which I am anxious about these days. I don't think it's much use to think of a way to come up with your troops themselves, and to rely on one or two people to intercede. "Feng's expression is very sincere. After I resigned, I went with Wang Kairu to see Lu Zhonglin. Lu said: "Mr. Feng and I are struggling with Xiang Fang's affairs, what are you going to do?" I talked about the situation that everyone discussed when we came, and then I told Feng's opinion and asked Lu how to do it. Lu said: "Yes, Han Xiangfang is afraid that it will be difficult to return to the army. The most important issue now is to save his life first, and Mr. Feng is right.

It would be better for the generals of your troops to express this to Chairman Chiang so that he has some concerns. The most important thing is that the troops must be united and not divided by others, so that they can have strength. Do your own research. Mr. Feng and I naturally tried our best to find a way, and there was no need to say anything else. ”

When we returned to the office, we all thought that Feng and Lu were extremely concerned about Han Jun, and they talked very reasonably.

I thought at the time that when Han was the commander of the regiment, brigade, and division, he was all promoted by Lu Zhonglin, and most of the officers of the Third Route Army were Lu's old subordinates. There are many ways for the deer, and his arrival in the Third Route Army can not only push Feng Yuxiang to save Han, but also benefit the entire Third Route Army. I told Wang Kairu about this method, and Wang agreed very much. We went to see Feng again the next day and reported our opinion to Feng. I said, "I plan to send a telegram from the generals of the Third Route to make Chiang have some scruples." We also think of this part of the team on the third road, since Han was detained, the group of dragons has no leader, Sun Tongxuan may not be able to lead it, and as soon as there is a split inside, it will be divided and eliminated by others. This team is trained by the gentleman, and you can't just watch it. This team was the old foundation of the First Division, and many of the officers were the old subordinates of Director Lu (Lu was the director of law enforcement at that time). If he can go and say hello, it will not be a problem. What do you think, sir, can Director Lu go?" Feng smiled and said, "Okay! Your method is very good. As for the matter of Rui Bo (Lu Zhonglin) going to lead this part of the team, it is not so simple. On the one hand, whether Reber is willing to go, on the other hand, how he will go in the future, and whether he will be allowed to go, are all questions. Wait for me to ask Reeber!" Seeing that Feng means that he is very willing to go, as for how to go, the question is indeed not simple. At first, I only proposed this method for the sake of saving Han and hoping that the deer would go, and I did not give much thought to whether Chiang Kai-shek was willing to let the deer go and whether the generals of the Third Route Army were unanimously willing to let him go.

The next day Feng called me and told me that Lu agreed with our approach and ordered us to rush back to Shandong on the same day, send a telegram to rescue Han, and do some work among the generals of the Third Route Army. As for the question of how to express his hope to Chiang that Lu would go, it will be seen whether Chiang can take the overall situation of the Anti-Japanese War as the priority, let Lu go, and then try to promote it in many ways. We asked Feng Yuxiang to read the draft of the telegram that we had prepared, and made some revisions. The original text of the telegram can no longer be recalled, to the effect that: The failure of the War of Resistance and the abandonment of Jinan are not Han's sins alone, and the generals of the Third Route Army are also responsible.

Feng Yuxiang and Lu Zhonglin gave me great support in the transportation vehicles that I had returned from Hankou to Cao County. Feng said: "If you go by bus, I'm afraid it will delay time." Later, Yulu asked for a special car, hung two carriages with one head, and the adjutant of Tonglu (I can't remember his name) rushed to Liuhe overnight and got off the car, and changed to a car to return to Cao County.

I returned to Cao County and reported to Sun Tongxuan about the process of going to Han to save Han, and Sun was extremely satisfied. Regarding the matter of sending telegrams, please ask the army commanders and division commanders to come to Cao County to discuss before making a photograph. I thought that things could go smoothly, but unexpectedly, Chiang Bocheng secretly reported to Chiang Kai-shek about my activities and Sun Tongxuan's summoning of all army and division commanders to Cao County to discuss the matter of sending electricity to save Korea. Therefore, our plan was not realized, and some people later said that my trip to Wuhan not only failed to save South Korea, but was enough to promote South Korea's death. I myself have realized that although Jiang's murder of Han is a final decision, our approach is indeed not prudent and rigorous.

(iv)

We were waiting for the army commanders and division commanders to come to Cao County to discuss the telegram to rescue Han, and Sun Tongxuan suddenly received a telegram from Hankow, saying that on January 25 (the twenty-third day of the twelfth lunar month of the old calendar), Chiang had shot Han dead in Wuchang. When everyone heard this, they were all stunned. At this time, I didn't want to do any other activities, so I obtained Sun Tongxuan's consent, officially handed over the post of automobile corps to Li Tiemin, and rushed to Hankou with Han's wife Ji Ganqing to handle Han's funeral.

When I went to see Feng, Feng saw me this time, and expressed a very sad look, and began by saying: "You are back, this hand is really poisonous, I didn't expect it to be so fast." You go and see what to do with his corpse, and talk about the rest later!" I said, "Han's family is also here, and they plan to bring it back for burial." Feng said: "During the national disaster, he died like this again, don't be extravagant, go and do it!" I returned to the office, Wang Kairu had already completed the formalities for the body to be collected by the family, and the next day we went to Changchun in Wuchang with Ji Ganqing to collect the body. We originally thought that the funeral must be very bad, and we planned to change another set of clothes and coffins, but only later did we know that all the funerals were treated as admirals, and the coffins were not bad. We opened the coffin and looked at it, and there were seven shots in the body, all in the chest, the blood stains had been washed and the clothes were fine. Everyone discussed, there was no need to change it again, only add another silk slip, cover the whole body, and cover the coffin again. I heard that after Han was shot, Feng and Lu sent people to take care of the funeral on their behalf.

I went to see Feng again and reported the situation of Han Ling's corpse. Feng asked, "Where are you going to be buried?" I said, "I decided to bury him in Jigong Mountain first, and after the war, his family will have to be transported back to the north for burial." Feng said, "Very good." Later, when I talked about my return to Shandong, I said: "I went back only two days ago, and Sun Tongxuan promised to invite the commanders of various armies and divisions to study the matter of power generation. Sun Tongxuan was already under Jiang Bocheng's control, and he didn't have the courage to do anything, so things didn't get things done. Feng said, "Reber has done a lot for Han's affairs. At the time of the trial, he tried to exonerate Xiang Fang, but he did not expect that all measures would be ineffective in the end, and many people privately said that this was a revenge for the 'Double Twelve' incident, which seemed to be quite reasonable. Feng's attitude towards Han can be seen clearly from Han's arrest to death. As for the rumors outside, Feng Yi advocated killing Han, which was completely a kind of air released by Jiang Fang, and it was definitely not a fact.

A few days later, when Han's coffin was transported, there was a lot of trouble. At that time, many patriotic workers believed that Han was shot without resisting the war, and at first he did not care about the transportation, and when it arrived at the station, the railway workers refused to transfer the car for shipment. Later, after Sun Lianzhong's office sent someone to assist, Lu also sent someone to negotiate the car, and it took a lot of twists and turns before it could be shipped.

I was going to go to Jigong Mountain to take care of the funeral, but suddenly Wang Kairu received news that Chiang Kai-shek had charged me with inciting the army and rebelling against the central government, and ordered me to be taken and told to take refuge. I immediately went to Mr. Feng Yuxiang to hide, and did not go to Jigong Mountain. I went to Feng and told Feng that Chiang Kai-shek had ordered me to be arrested and asked him to try to rescue me.

Feng then ordered me to stay with him and told me not to go out. Many days later, Feng met with Chiang Kai-shek, and by the way, he interceded on his behalf, explaining that I was a relative of Han, and that it was normal for me to follow Han for many years, and to feel Han's acquaintance and rush to rescue him on his behalf; as for contacting the troops, it was also for the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and there was absolutely no intention of resisting the central authorities. Feng He said: "This person has been with me for a long time, I know him very well, he is very honest, and he is willing to vouch for him." Jiang then agreed not to pursue the case, and then revoked the wanted notice. But there were Chiang's spies everywhere, and danger could occur at any time, so Feng left me to work with him as his attaché. After that, I accompanied Feng to inspect the troops in Chengdu, Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangxi, and other major cities; after returning to Chongqing, I took up the communication mission of the vice chairman's office. Later, I heard that Feng had plans to go abroad, and I thought there was no need for me to stay any longer, so I borrowed a plane ticket to Hong Kong that a friend had bought, and quit Feng to fly to Hong Kong and change my career to business.
