BYD Qin L exposed, DM5.0 plus hybrid special chassis, fuel vehicles are completely finished?

A few days ago, a group of spy photos of BYD's new model Qin L were exposed. This is also another "L-oriented" dynasty model of BYD after Song L. Although the new car is based on the e-platform 3.0, it is not only a pure electric version like the Song L, but an active DM-i hybrid version, which seems to have a similar pedigree to the seal DM-i from this point.

What's even more "excessive" is that BYD has also prepared two killer features for Qin L, that is, a hybrid chassis with CTB technology and the latest DM5.0 system (a new generation of DM-i).

Considering that BYD Qin will sell more than 480,000 units in 2023, and even won the annual family sedan championship for the first time, it seems that there is no end to the large-scale "increase" now.

(1) New hybrid chassis, A-class ceiling?

According to BYD's internal information, Qin L will be the first to use a new hybrid chassis codenamed "P5", which can be said to be another killer move for BYD after DM-i and e platform 3.0.

The core of this system is the use of BYD's latest CTB (Cell to Body) technology, which successfully integrates the battery pack into the body structure, which also makes the body more rigid and stable. Judging from the previous CTB of the seal and the Denza N7, the system has increased the torsional rigidity of the body to 40,000N, while also compressing the thickness of the chassis to make the interior space larger.

The "P5" hybrid chassis also has exhaust pipes stuffed into the cavity of the stringers, making the driving more complete. In terms of suspension configuration, the rear torsion beam non-independent suspension of the old Qin has been replaced with a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear four-link independent suspension, which is expected to improve handling and comfort.

After using the hybrid chassis, the BYD Seal's Elk test reached a speed of 83.5km/h, the maximum lateral stability acceleration was 1.05g, and the speed of the single-shift line test was 133km/h, allowing the handling of domestic cars to reach a new height. Qin L's limit may not be that high, but it doesn't seem too difficult to make an A-class car ceiling.

Thanks to the new hybrid-specific chassis design and better space utilization, it is natural that a larger battery pack can be fitted into the vehicle, allowing the vehicle to have a longer range. Judging from the exposed information, the battery power of the entry-level version of the new car has become 10.08kWh, which is 21% higher than the entry-level version of the current Qin PLUS.

Although the official entry version of the pure electric range is 60km, BYD uses the WLTC working condition, which should be about 70km when converted into CLTC working conditions, which is also a relatively leading level in the same class of models.

In addition, the BYD Qin L has also updated the electric drive system and used higher-precision motor control technology. The vehicle not only consumes less power, but also performs better in different working conditions such as acceleration, deceleration, and climbing. From this point of view, Qin L's update is indeed large enough.

(2) Almighty DM5.0, no shortcomings?

In 2021, BYD launched the DM-i system for the first time, which is also the fourth-generation DM system, announcing that domestic cars have entered the hybrid era. The DM5.0 equipped with Qin L is the second-generation DM-i system in the real sense, and BYD has carried out a series of checks and fillings.

First of all, let's look at what is the biggest advantage of DM-i? The answer is that 99% of the working conditions in the urban area are electrically driven, and the engine always generates electricity in the high-efficiency range, which is as smooth as a tram. At the same time, it can be mixed without electricity, and it can also save fuel without electricity, which is indeed all-round. But this system is not without shortcomings, first of all, the efficiency of high-speed direct drive is still not high enough, and then it is not compatible with high-power engines, so that flagship models such as Han and Tang still use 1.5T power.

The latest DM5.0 further completes this system. The Qin L uses the latest Atkinson cycle engine, and the biggest advantage of this engine is the use of an electronic turbocharger, which can not only keep running efficiently at high speeds, but also provide enough power at low speeds.

With the blessing of the new double planetary gears, the new car achieves lower fuel consumption at high speeds, and at the same time can be compatible with more powerful engines, BYD's 2.0T hybrid engine finally has a place to use, although the Qin L will not be equipped for the time being.

The power generation efficiency of the new car has also been improved at high speeds, and the fuel consumption of the vehicle is lower in the state of power loss. According to BYD's official statement, DM5.0 has achieved a 10%~15% increase in power, while fuel consumption has also been reduced by about 15%. Judging from the published data, the fuel consumption of Qin L has reached 3.8L/100km, compared with Qin PLUS's 4.6L/100km, the degree of optimization is even more than 15%, and there is another reverse "false standard"?

It is worth mentioning that DM5.0 also uses more advanced signal processing and transmission technology, which can effectively reduce signal interference and transmission errors, and it is believed that there will never be a problem of limited power for false alarms. At the same time, BYD has also added the function of intelligent identification equipment and charger to the new car, which can complete intelligent matching and fast charging. In 2023, BYD Qin, Song, and Han's three blockbuster models are basically the best-selling models in their respective levels. It stands to reason that such a model is a market benchmark in itself, and it can dominate the market without changing.

In fact, the answer is very simple: BYD's goal has never been to defeat the so-called opponents, it wants to change the pattern of the entire market.

If the price of 99,800 yuan of Qin PLUS DM-i Champion Edition last year is to subvert the market, the significance of DM5.0 is to continue to increase the size, so that consumers can buy lower fuel consumption at a lower price, and further subvert the market.

Pure electric models are good, but not every region and every user is suitable for pure electric vehicles. For example, the lingering winter range anxiety in the Northeast is a threshold that pure electric models cannot bypass. But DM5.0 does not have such shortcomings, whether it is the first car or the second car of the family, whether it is daily transportation or has higher driving needs, Qin L can be perfectly satisfied.

From the point of view of the price, the 100,000 level can enjoy the driving control ceiling, and at the same time there is the ultimate energy consumption and strong performance, which is really difficult to top.

In 2023, BYD sold 3.02 million new vehicles, successfully becoming the world's new energy vehicle sales champion. The penetration rate of new energy in the domestic passenger car market has also reached 35.7%, which has reached a new level.
