UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemns the recent series of violent crimes in Ecuador, UN Secretary-General Spokesperson Dujarric said today.

After a well-known gang leader successfully escaped from prison last weekend, a spate of deadly gang attacks erupted in the country, with police officers kidnapped.

"State of Emergency"

The crisis prompted Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa to declare a 60-day state of emergency in his country on Monday.

In recent months, Ecuador has been severely disrupted by violence related to gangs and drug trafficking. A clear example of this is the break-in and brief control of a television station in Guayaquil, Ecuador's second-largest city, on Tuesday while the station's cameras were still operating.

According to media reports, the Ecuadorian military has said it will respond by force, saying that now the country's future is in jeopardy, and that every "terrorist organization" is its legitimate target.

Deeply shocked

UN Secretary-General's spokesman Dujarric said at a regular press conference on the 10th that Secretary-General Guterres had a telephone conversation with the Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations that morning.

Guterres was alarmed by the deteriorating situation in Ecuador and its devastating impact on the lives of the Ecuadorian people. He strongly condemned these violent crimes in the country and expressed solidarity with the people of Ecuador.
