Many people may have heard that patients with gout must limit their purine intake, purines are something that appears with genetic material, and yogurt is fermented, with lactic acid bacteria and metabolites, there will be more genetic material, that is, more purines, so it cannot be drunk.
Is that really the case?
Not really.
In fact, in general, dairy products have a very low purine content, and if you look at the data of specific purine content, the general yogurt is almost 0.
Numerous studies have shown that milk and yogurt can help lower blood uric acid levels and reduce the risk of gout attacks [1-2]. Drinking milk or yogurt once or more times a day was associated with lower blood uric acid levels, especially skim milk and low-calorie yogurt, and skim milk powder was also found to be associated with a decrease in gout frequency [2]. A prospective study showed that men who drank two or more glasses of skim milk per day had a 46% lower risk of gout compared to men who drank less than one glass per month [3].
The mechanism of this is multifaceted, such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, whey protein, casein, lactose and orotate in milk are believed to promote uric acid excretion, some special ingredients (dextran casein, G600 milk fat extract) can also reduce gout attacks by inhibiting the inflammatory response of urate crystals in the joints, plus the milk itself as a body fluid secreted by the mammary glands, the actual purine content is very low.
In particular, for people with high uric acid and gout, many high-protein foods are afraid to eat because of the high purine content at the same time, so it is necessary to drink some skim milk and eat some low-calorie yogurt (such as choosing unsweetened ones) to supplement high-quality protein.
Therefore, in the end, we should pay attention to the frequency of gout attacks, and dairy products are very beneficial, so you can choose yogurt with confidence, and there is no problem with drinking milk.
If you drink a lot of food every day, it is recommended that you choose low-fat milk or skim milk, which may be healthier because it has fewer calories and saturated fat.
