In a recent episode of the YouTube show, Super Smash Bros. producer Masahiro Sakurai shared his comments on his future in the gaming industry. He mentioned that he is still actively working on game creation and has also started his own YouTube channel.
Sakurai noted that while he's never tried something like YouTube, he doesn't think he's completely stagnant. He also talked about the departure of some veteran developers from the gaming industry, with many disappearing in the middle of their careers, except for those who retired. He called on people not to see these departing creators as "outdated" or "done", because they might have other destinations.
Masahiro Sakurai said last year that he couldn't imagine a new Smash Bros. game going beyond the scope of Ultimate. However, the Smash Bros. Special Edition, released in 2018, added 13 new characters through strong DLC support, bringing the final cast to 89 characters. Despite this, Sakurai reportedly claimed to be "semi-retired".
However, according to Masahiro Sakurai's statement in November 2021, even if he wanted so, he could not imagine that the series would continue without his participation. He said that Smash Bros. is a major blockbuster for Nintendo, so it is reasonable to assume that there will be a next work, but how exactly it will come to fruition will require some work. He said he hopes to be able to continue working with Nintendo in any way.
