The air quality monitoring agency pointed out on the 5th that the concentration of PM2.5, that is, fine particulate matter, in the atmospheric environment of Skopje that day was much higher than the limit set by the World Health Organization. It is known that Skopje was once ranked as one of the most polluted cities in Europe. Heavy industry and coal-fired power plants have been major sources of air pollution in North Macedonia. In recent years, the country has been working to reduce the use of coal. However, due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and other factors, North Macedonia is facing an energy crisis, so it has to reopen its previously closed power plants to reduce its dependence on imported electricity.
