Wu Yu, the former production director of TVB, shared a precious history in Wenyun's video website program. He recalled the golden age of TVB, especially the origin of the popular TVB TV celebration program "Jade Singer Celebrates Taiwan", and the mystery of the disappearance of Bruce Lee's precious video tape in TVB.
In the 80s, TVB's TV dramas and theme songs were extremely popular and reached its heyday, and the theme songs of TV dramas at that time still sound catchy today. At that time, almost ninety percent of Hong Kong singers signed contracts with TVB. Wu Yu mentioned that although more than 300 singers have been signed, only a dozen singers such as Tan Shilin, Anita Mui, and Leslie Cheung often appear in the show.
On November 16, 1991, ATV planned to hold a large-scale public welfare activity "United for Public Welfare", which attracted the participation of many celebrities including Sister Fei, Lu Haipeng, and Xu Xiaofeng, which also made TVB very nervous, and then Wu Yu thought of a big move.
At that time, TVB's Taiwan celebration was on November 19, and in the face of ATV's challenge, Wu Yu decided to organize a grand program. He thought of TVB's contract singers who don't often appear, so he planned "Jade Singers Celebrate Taiwan", asking all record companies to send their singers to participate on November 16. The show is divided into male and female singer groups, led by Tan Shilin and Anita Mui respectively.
However, in the early morning of November 16, Wu Yu received a sudden phone call, saying that there was a fire in TVB. Wu Yu thought it was a joke at first, but then rushed to the scene and found that there was indeed a serious fire, which burned all the props of "Jade Singer Celebrating Taiwan".
Despite this, TVB decided to continue with the show. Wu Yu said that the audience came to see the stars, not the props. In the end, the show was played with a minimalist décor, but it was an unexpected great success, reaching 9 to 1 in the ratings and being the winner of the night.
In addition to telling the story of the Taiwan celebration program, Wu Yu also talked about another topic: Bruce Lee's precious video tapes on TVB. There are very few of these tapes left today, and it is said that the higher-ups of the time reused them for other programs in order to save costs. Wen Yan believes that this is a lack of appreciation of cultural heritage, and regrets this.
It seems that TVB's frugal tradition has been around for a long time, clothes and props can be reused for decades, but I didn't expect that even the video tapes would be reused, it's really a pity, Bruce Lee also participated in a lot of TVB activities back then, but there were very few left, which is really sad, but in the 70s, the TV industry was just starting, and this practice is understandable.
