Valve has announced that Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 are no longer supported, which means that Steam will no longer provide new client updates and security fixes. This decision will take effect on January 1, 2024.
The V press released a statement saying that Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users should upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 as soon as possible to avoid malware and other security threats.
Steam no longer provides technical support for older versions of Windows, and there is no guarantee that Steam will continue to be viable on these older operating systems.
One of the main reasons is that Google Chrome has stopped supporting older operating systems, and Steam relies on an embedded browser.
Valve encourages players to quickly upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 to keep their personal computers and Steam accounts safe.
It should be noted that although Valve stopped supporting Windows 7, they did not turn off Steam on Windows 7. However, after January 1, 2024, issues may arise and will not be fixed.
For Valve, dropping support for Windows 7 seems reasonable, as the operating system has been released for almost 15 years. If you choose to upgrade to Windows 10, be aware that Microsoft is phasing out security support for the operating system, so you may need to upgrade again before October 2025. In other words, it is better to upgrade to win11 directly in one step.
In conclusion, according to V Society, users need to upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 in time to protect the security of their computers and Steam accounts.
