Hearthstone has just announced that the Duel game mode will be discontinued in April 2024. Until then, no further updates will be scheduled, and the game mode will be completely removed from the Hearthstone client in a few months.
Duel mode was officially launched on November 17, 2020, along with Hearthstone's Darkmoon Circus. In the game, the player chooses a hero, chooses a special hero power, and constructs a deck of different cards, adding more cards to the deck after each match until they get 12 wins or 3 losses. For more than three years, the decision period was updated, but it was considered to be in the testing phase.
While the Duel mode will be removed, some game modes will still be retained in Hearthstone's arena format. According to the same press release, some dueling treasures will appear in the next Arena season. Once the next Arena Season approaches, players can expect to hear more specifics.
The Duel mode isn't the first major loss Hearthstone has suffered recently. In February 2023, Hearthstone put mercenaries in maintenance mode after the last big update. However, as a primary PvE mode independent of the build, players can still play Mercenary, while Duel is completely removed from the game due to the effort required to maintain. What's more, last year's esports program was drastically curtailed, leaving fans nervous about the sport's competitive prospects.
While the loss of two game modes and the destruction of the eSports project may sound terrible, Hearthstone is still going strong. It hopes to divert the saved resources to other game modes by stopping the duel. PUBG is working on introducing a two-player co-op mode, which is scheduled to be released in a patch later this year, while next year and new expansions are likely to be announced in the next month or two. Hearthstone will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2024, and despite the failure of Showdown, the game is still pushing forward.
