Preface
Some say that this movie is about the fantasy adventure of a teenager and a tiger in a lonely boat at sea.
It is full of gorgeous and unique visual presentations like fairy tales, and nuanced and lifelike special effects tigers.
Others say that this is a terrible story that hides a murderous motive and is a metaphor for human nature.
Compare everything to a beautiful dream distorted by the child's inability to accept the fear of reality.
But the movie itself has already pointed out the answer to this question.
Which one you choose, which is the truth.
Confused faith
The film opens with an edited section that shows the diverse and unique creatures of the zoo.
From hummingbirds to giant elephants, everything seems to show us that the earth itself has always been full of wonders.
Then it comes to a conversation between the protagonist and a writer.
The two not only discussed the zoo where he grew up, but also talked about the origin of his name.
This "pie" is not because his father was a mathematician.
Instead, it was because his father inadvertently named him after a Parisian public pool.
But because of this, he was often ridiculed by his classmates at school, and the name of this public pool happened to be homophonic for pee in English.
So many classmates began to call him "pee", and even occasionally the teacher would mistakenly call him "pee".
Eventually, in his second year, he began to refer to himself as "pie", saying that it was a mathematical concept taken from π.
In the end, in order to convince his classmates, he recited the π more than 100 decimal places, successfully redefining the meaning of the name.
At the end of this story, the writer asks about the purpose of his trip.
He said he wanted to know the story of Pi's solo voyage.
But Pie talks about his relationship with religion since he was a child.
Although he is Indian, Hinduism is not his only religion.
Christianity, Muslims and even Judaism, he grew up dabbling in it.
And think that there is a common connection.
Until one time he secretly carried his father behind his back to feed the newly bought tiger "Richard Parker".
Try to use the good ideas he learned in religion to get in touch with these natural creations that have been imprisoned.
As a result, he was discovered by his father and severely punished.
His father, who was already a rational and religious, decided to present the most ferocious side of these natural predators directly in front of him because of this incident.
And the pie who witnessed the tiger hunting and predator.
The simple faith in my heart is thus obscured by the fog of doubt.
Drifting and sailing
The lack of faith in Pai's heart also made his life gradually lose its direction.
Start spending your days at school boringly.
Until he meets a girl named Ananti.
The girl's pure love for dance and life once again ignited his belief and desire for goodness in life.
But it was also during this time that my father said that he was under pressure to move his family to the United States.
Pie had no choice but to say goodbye to the best things in his life again.
Standing on the distant ship, he felt that his whole life was gradually swallowed up by the undulating waters.
Even when his mother came to comfort him, he could not accept the pain of saying goodbye to everything he knew so suddenly.
And the family is far away from the familiar environment, and it is not easy to get on the way to a new life.
Mother and Pie were religiously vegetarian, but the ship's cook only served sausages and beef, and his father got into a big fight with the cook.
On the fourth day of the voyage, the ship encountered a terrible storm at sea.
Pie, who hadn't been out to sea much, was still dancing happily on the boat at first.
As a result, after watching the waves sweep away the crew on deck, he began to panic and search for his family on the flooded cruise ship.
But after a moment of panic, he was the only one on the lifeboat.
And the ship gradually moved away from the cruise ship that was overturned by the waves.
Pai was left drifting slowly on the lifeboat with a zebra that had escaped onto the boat.
Ark Drifting
He tried to use a lifebuoy to help the crew who was shipwrecked in the water, but it was his father's tiger "Richard Parker" who climbed into the ring.
To ensure safety, he could only climb on the wooden pole at the bow of the boat with a swimming ring and watch all his relatives sink into the deep sea.
When he woke up the next day, he found that the hyenas and orangutans had also fled to the ship.
But because my father used sleeping pills in the animals' food to keep them safe when they boarded the boat, the dizzy hyena was not dangerous.
However, as the effect of the medicine faded and the lack of food at sea occurred, the hyena eventually killed the zebra.
And once again forced the pie to the edge of the wooden pole in the bow of the ship.
However, Pai remembered that there were still plenty of spare oars and life jackets on board.
He used the extra supplies to make a small life raft that hung on the side of the boat, but in the process, the hyena made another sortie and killed the orangutans on board.
Just as Pie thinks he's the only living creature outside of the hyena, the tiger rushes out of the cargo compartment.
Bites the hyena to death, but also forces Pie onto a life raft.
This also led to the fact that Pie could only quietly get on the boat to get supplies while the tiger was resting.
Other times, the tiger is in the boat, and he is on the life raft, and the two are connected by a rope and drift on the boundless sea.
He tried to throw out the drifting bottle for help, relying on buckets and cans to catch the rainwater.
But even in such desperate circumstances, he still held on to his hope of survival.
Eventually, when the tiger went to sea to catch fish, he found an opportunity to climb aboard the boat.
But at the moment when cutting the lanyard next to the boat, the tiger drowned.
Instead, he decided to return to the life raft with two boxes of supplies.
And the tiger still occupies the boat that will decide his life.
Unfortunately, one night, a whale jumped out of the sea and washed away his small raft.
The little food left on the ship also drifted away.
In desperation, the faction can only fish to survive, but the fish he catches exudes a strange luster.
Believing that this was an incarnation of Shiva to give him salvation, he prayed and began to live on fish and meat.
In order to get the supplies on the ship more easily, he tried many times, and finally tamed the terrible beast with the help of fish and some of the lessons in the survival guide.
But he decided to get back on his life raft anyway.
He wrote in his diary that the fear of tigers kept him alive.
Satisfying the tiger's needs allows him to be focused on the boundless sea.
But he was still desperate to be rescued, and on the calm sea level after witnessing a dolphin migration, he saw a ferry in the distance.
But no matter how many flares he fired, he didn't get a response.
Despite saying that you can't give up hope, after all this.
Watching the hope of being rescued streak through the distance, Pie's face was filled with exhaustion.
And his relationship with the tiger is getting closer, although there are no more supplies on board.
But the two live peacefully at opposite ends of the ark.
The long-term life at sea also made Pie's consciousness gradually blurred.
One quiet night, through the reflection of the sea, he saw the cruise ship that had brought him here.
In the end, I don't know if it was the arrangement of fate or the inevitable helplessness, another storm hit him.
And this storm took his life raft with him.
But that ray of light through the clouds still convinced him that it was God's will.
This time, he's still alive.
A few days later, when he woke up again, he found his ship leaning on a strange island made of vines.
It was the first time he had docked since the shipwreck.
He happily ate the wild vegetables on the ground and the vine melons by the trees.
Even swim in the lake on the island.
There are also enough lemurs for tigers to hunt and he doesn't worry about being attacked.
So Pie decided to settle here.
But when he woke up at night, he found that all the animals had fled to the trees.
And the lake where he had swam before was still smeared with acid.
The puzzled Pie plucked a glowing fruit from a tree.
But when the shell is peeled back, inside is a human tooth.
There was a time when someone had spent their entire lives on the island, and looking at the tooth, Pie saw what would happen to him if he stayed on the island.
So he set sail again, chopping vine melons, picking enough seaweed, catching lemurs, and once again floating out into the sea with his tiger friends.
Eventually, they docked at the edge of the Mexican coast and really returned to land.
The scrawny man and the tiger, one staggered into the jungle, the other fell to the ground waiting to be rescued.
But the rescued Pie only cried, regretting that he didn't get a chance to say goodbye to Richard Parker.
Like his family who were drowned in a boat, they have been through so much together, but they haven't even had a chance to say goodbye.
Untrue truth
While the writer was puzzled by the story, Pie brought out a report on his rescued case.
There is another version that he told the cruise line, a real version.
In this version, instead of hyenas, zebras, and orangutans, it is the cooks, sailors, and his mother who board the ark.
And he was a tiger, the only animal that survived.
Fight between all the animals.
It has also become a cannibalism between people in order to survive.
Eventually, the party threw the last question to the writer in front of him, "Which version do you prefer?".
Between two stories that are full of death, injuries and pain, but never give up hope.
Which is the choice exactly, which is the real one?
Or the same truth, but about the boy and the drifting tiger.
And the writer's final decision unsurprisingly fell on the untrue truth.
epilogue
People debate the authenticity of the two stories in the film, but they don't think that they are not the subject of the story.
Having that option is.
People have experienced pain and trauma, but how to deal with it is the key.
After all, facts have become a thing of the past, and it no longer matters whether it is true or not.
What really matters is what this event means to you, a horrific experience that destroys your life?
Cause more suffering now while you are still alive.
Or a fun and unique fantasy rafting?
Prove to you that after so much suffering and suffering, the hope of life still hits you again.
Like these stories that have been told time and time again.
We have the right to choose our own truth.
