In Situ this design can represent a special and rich intersection of art, design and food. The wonderful effect of their gathering not only redefines the concept of the museum restaurant, but also re-examines our relationship with food. In order to realize the expansion plan of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the vision of Chef Corey Lee, we focused on the visibility of the streetscape and the accessibility of the streetscape to visitors, so that people can enjoy the fleeting moment in a simple and comfortable environment.
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, whose façade Mario Botha co-designed recently, has recently reopened, and the former museum restaurant occupies the museum's street frontage, and its interior space has been rediscovered, with some of the walls remaining in their original form exposed. An added element to the renovation is a white floating art interactive wall that takes up most of the restaurant's shelf space. We used steel-perforated felt acoustic panels between the street and the restaurant, as well as between the restaurant and the atrium of the existing museum, to optimize the visual and physical environmental parameters of the walkway. Together with the old walls, these interfaces provide a backdrop for the discreetly placed "handicrafts", like their various ingredients, intended to appeal to the customer's senses. All the inspiration in the design came from a collaborative process in which we wanted it to be a contrast of roughness and elegance, such as custom-made lamps, furniture and carved wooden ceilings.
Looking out from the street towards the restaurant, a new steel window frame and wooden doors are embedded in the storefront structure. Another entrance is set on the wood-paneled walls of the atrium of the existing museum, bringing a view of the atrium into the dining room and vice versa. Step into the restaurant and you'll find a casual standing, seating, lounge area, as well as a communal living room for the street and the museum. At the other end of the restaurant, a compact, subdued space offers a quiet, formal dining experience.
A vivid mural by Rosana Castrillo Diaz enlivens the front foyer, while a gold-framed painting by Tucker Nichols brings a subtle sense of seriousness to the dining area and succeeds in drawing the street gaze. The art wall at the end leaves a black and white picture for the diners, allowing the diners who come here and the food served by the restaurant to become the last "work of art" of the restaurant.
