The Japanese side responded that they would bear the costs incurred by the grounding of the Ever Given, and that they would discuss compensation with the insurance company later.
Japan's Zhengro Steamship, that is, the shipowner, also said that the accident should be regarded as "general average", and the cargo owners on the cargo ship should also jointly bear the amount of compensation.
"General average" refers to the joint sharing of reasonable expenses to ensure the safety of all property in the event of a common danger during the carriage of a cargo ship.
The ship ran aground on the 23rd, and with great effort, the 29th finally cleared the mud and pulled the Ever Given out. But the problem has only just begun.
The Japanese shipowners have not yet decided how to compensate and how much they will be compensated. The canal party, which did not get the letter, was afraid that they would not pay their debts, so they withheld the Ever Given. They said they would not be released without compensation.

On May 28, 2021, nearly two months after the vessel was "rescued", the canal side released the results of the investigation, and the Ever Given ran aground due to improper operation by the captain, and the captain was fully responsible.
Their reasoning was that the weather was indeed bad that day, but the captain of the freighter did nothing and did nothing. Many other ships applied for postponements that day due to bad weather, but the Ever Given did not.
Therefore, it was because the captain did not apply for an extension or take other effective measures that the ship ran aground. In this case, not only the canal side is not responsible, but even the insurance company does not need to lose money, and the shipowner, that is, the Japanese shipowner, is fully responsible.
In July, the canal side signed a settlement agreement with the Japanese shipowner, and the Ever Given was released from the Suez Canal and re-released from the rivers and lakes. Despite being grounded for only seven days, the unfortunate ship was detained for more than forty days due to a compensation dispute.
As for the amount of compensation, the canal side originally demanded nearly $1 billion in compensation, but after discussing it later, it gave face and dropped it to more than $500 million. As long as the Japanese shipowner first gave a deposit of 200 million US dollars, he could release the Ever Given first.
