Cows, windmills, tulips, when you see these elements, do you think you're in a small town in Europe? This is the Holland Flower Seascape Area in Dafeng District, Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province. Why is it called "Dutch Flower Sea" and what does it have to do with the Netherlands?
From saline-alkali land to "sea of flowers"
More than 100 years ago, Dafeng was a saline-alkali land along the beach, with nine floods in ten years, low crop yields, and the aborigines made a living by fishing and boiling salt. In 1919, Zhang Jian, a well-known Chinese industrialist, hired a water conservancy expert from the Netherlands, Terek, to build a water conservancy project to desalinate the soil and solve the flood hazards. To this day, this project is still in use. In order to commemorate this history, in 2012, Dafeng planted tulips symbolizing Sino-Dutch friendship here to create a "Dutch Flower Sea" scenic spot.
Wang Hua, deputy general manager of Yancheng Doulonggang Ecotourism Resort Group Co., Ltd., said: "There are flowers in the Dutch Flower Sea all year round, and the flower planting area is about 3,000 acres. The most distinctive feature of this season (autumn) is the lily (not the tulip). Now we are working on the post-harvest treatment of the tulips and the pre-planting screening. ”
Tulips are in full bloom in March and April every year. As soon as the flowering period is over, the tulips should be selected, cultivated and transplanted. At this time, the flower farmers in the scenic area will be busy selecting tulips for the coming year.
"This is our production line for grading and selecting tulip bulbs. There are about 20 workers here. The first function of the production line is to remove impurities and pick out some diseased tulips on the conveyor belt, and the second function is to classify and separate the large ones from the small ones. Wang Hua said.
The average family earns 60,000 or 70,000 yuan a year
While visiting the tulip bulb production line, we met Li Xiaolan, a flower farmer at work. Through conversations, we learned that she transferred her family's land to the Holland Flower Sea View Area, and worked here, with an annual land transfer fee and salary income of more than 40,000 yuan.
After the land was transferred, the elderly in the village not only got a second chance of employment, but also had more livelihood security. However, in the face of such a large area of scenic spots, the local government faced many difficulties in the early stage of preparation.
"The land transfer started in 2012, and the scale of the transfer is more than 1,000 households. Many people have concerns: If the land is transferred to you, will it dig up my land to a pulp? Will it cause pollution?" Talking about how to dispel the concerns of farmers, Wang Hua said: "Give the people a transfer fee, and the people will participate in planting and maintenance with us, and they can still get wages." Now ordinary families have an income of 60,000 or 70,000 yuan a year. ”
Let China's tulip industry develop
After the completion of land transfer, the construction of scenic spots faces a more core problem is that the technology, equipment and raw materials required for tulip cultivation must rely on foreign imports, which is costly. In order to reduce costs and ensure the quality of tulips, the scenic spot contacted many parties and invited Nicol, an expert in Dutch tulip bulbs.
Nicol says: "At first, my job was to do some consulting work on flowers for the sea of flowers. After a few years, my task changed, and we needed to develop the tulip industry in China. ”
With the arrival of Nicol, a tulip R&D center was established in the scenic spot, and core technologies such as bulb cultivation and soil management were gradually localized.
"Now, 80 to 90 percent of the domestic tulips that we propagate ourselves. We have cultivated our own technical team, realized the mechanization of tulip bulb propagation, and also produced some new varieties, such as yellow beauty, red beauty, etc. Wang Hua said.
The industrial chain model is becoming more and more mature
The application of new technologies and equipment has reduced the cultivation cost of tulips by 90%. The scenic spot has quickly realized large-scale planting, and the supporting construction of the flower market, Dafeng's tulips are going to the whole country. The Dutch Flower Sea has driven the development of the industry and brought more jobs to the local people, with about 1,000 direct jobs and about 5,000 indirect jobs.
Wang Hua told reporters: "In the next step, we want to benchmark the flower market in Yunnan, and build the Dutch Flower Sea into the largest tulip-based trade platform in the Yangtze River Delta, so as to add more jobs for the local people." ”
Nowadays, the industrial chain model of "tourist attraction + bulb base + farmer planting" in the Dutch Flower Sea is becoming more and more mature, which has driven more than 3,000 farmers in the surrounding 8 villages to engage in the flower bulb industry, with an annual per capita income of more than 30,000 yuan and an increase in local economic output value of more than 300 million yuan. At the same time, the scenic spot has also boosted the development of many industries such as performances and catering, and the industrial blueprint around flowers is slowly unfolding in Dafeng.
