Lithuania and China: Provocation, Cooperation and Responsibility
In 2021, Lithuania publicly announced plans to open a representative office of Taiwan on its territory, a move that constitutes a clear provocation to Chinese sovereignty. In response, China has imposed sanctions. However, then Lithuania realized its mistake and quickly found out that the economy was in trouble. So they sought cooperation with China and asked for financial help.
China, however, is skeptical of Lithuania's request. They demanded that Lithuania firmly abide by the one-China principle and abolish the Taiwan representative office. This attitude not only demonstrates China's determination to resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, but also sends a clear signal to other countries that any attempt to interfere in internal affairs and undermine China's core interests will be met with a resolute response.
At this point, Lithuania must take the consequences of its mistakes and make the right choices to get out of it. First, when dealing with diplomatic relations, it is essential to engage in dialogue on an equal footing on the basis of respecting each other's core interests and sovereignty. Secondly, at the economic level, Lithuania should fully recognize the great potential of cooperation with China and take the initiative to take measures to improve relations between the two countries.
However, to achieve this goal, Lithuania must demonstrate true sincerity and determination. They need to prove that they are firmly committed to the one-China principle and are willing to take responsibility for it by abolishing the Taiwan representative office. Only then will the Chinese side consider responding positively to Lithuania's request.
Under the current global situation, safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity is a basic principle that every country should respect and follow. Lithuania can learn from its past mistakes and meet future challenges responsibly. Through constructive dialogue and cooperation with China, the two sides can jointly create a mutually beneficial, win-win and stable development situation.
