On the night of November 21, 1943, the town of Changde, Hunan Province, was filled with gunfire. The Japanese, supported by bombers and heavy artillery, launched a final offensive against the few hundred Chinese defenders. In this decisive battle, a general in the Chinese army resolutely chose to serve the country with death and protect the dignity and territorial integrity of the country with his own life.
The general's name was Xu Guozhang, who was born in Chengdu, Sichuan, and joined the French Protector Army at an early age to fight the Beiyang warlords with Mr. Zhongshan. Subsequently, he entered the officer training institute and the officer study class, where he achieved excellent results. After the outbreak of the All-out War of Resistance, Xu Guozhang led the 483rd Brigade out of Sichuan to resist the Japanese, and his farewell to his wife and children was full of affection and pride: "I went out of Sichuan to resist the war, and I was Xu Guo. You are in the rear, your wife must be diligent and thrifty, and your children must study hard. I send it in every month in addition to the salary you deserve, and I hope that you will work on your own. As for me, I hope you don't worry. With firm determination and love for the country, he entrusted his family and embarked on the journey of the War of Resistance.
The 483rd Brigade led by Xu Guozhang guarded the fortress of Tianjiazhen during the Battle of Wuhan and bravely resisted the Japanese attack for a month. In the Battle of Shangba River in eastern Hubei, his troops not only withstood the Japanese attack, but also successfully repelled the invading enemy. The 150th Division led by him made great efforts in the Battle of Western Hubei, fighting tenaciously against the enemy and defending China's territory. However, in the face of the continuous reinforcements of the Japanese army, the 150th Division was finally forced to retreat, and Xu Guozhang decisively ordered to lead the troops to the south and retreat, occupying the city of Changde, making the last resistance to the Chinese War of Resistance.
In the Battle of Changde, the Japanese army launched a fierce offensive against the city, Xu Guozhang was shot several times and was overtired, but he still insisted on commanding the battle on the battlefield. When his subordinates thought he had died in battle and were ready to transfer him to the south bank of the Yuan River, he chose to serve the country with death and committed suicide with a gun. This action showed his determination and responsibility as a soldier, and became the final footnote of his life.
Xu Guozhang used his loyalty and blood to protect China's dignity and national security. He put his responsibility ahead of the country and the nation, and did not hesitate to sacrifice his life. He was a role model for a patriotic general, and his spirit will always be remembered in our hearts.
