【Competition】Renovation design of the headquarters of the Santa Catarina State Architecture and Urban Planning Commission, Brazil

On October 9 of this year, the Conselho de Arquitetura e Urbanismo de Santa Catarina (CAU/SC) announced the results of a competition to design part of its headquarters building. The six-storey building, acquired last year by CAU/SC, is located on Avenida Rio Branco in Florianópolis, and the main areas of the building, such as the atrium, reception and façade, will be renovated according to the winning proposals of this competition.

The building opened to the public on December 8, 2022, and since then, CAU/SC has been budgeting for the project and seeking renovations to the building and its surroundings. CAU/SC President Patricia Sarquis Herden emphasized at the meeting: "At CAU headquarters, we want to bring all architects and urban planners closer to society, dialogue with the streets, and fulfill our commitment to making cities more humane. The design competition was launched in August this year.

The renovation competition covered the ground floor, second floor, loft (which can be properly covered), facades, terraces and vertical traffic spaces, including lobbyes, elevators and stairs on all floors. In addition to considering the dream of architects and urban planners to have their own home in Santa Catarina, CAU/SC intends to use the BIM design approach to make the building a reference for Santa Catarina professionals from the moment it was conceived.

In the end, an architectural studio from Curitiba in Brazil won first place, transforming the original side of the building facing the city into a staggered platform structure, opening the entire building to the city. From the new open staircase, the new public terrace on the roof is accessible to people inside the building and visiting members of the public from outside.
