In the emotional world of General Xu Shiyou, Nie Fengzhi is definitely an indispensable figure.
On September 12, 1982, at the 12th National People's Congress of the Communist Party of China, a special Advisory Committee was established.
At the Twelfth National Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Xu Shiyou was elected to the Central Advisory Committee, and at the first meeting of the Central Advisory Committee of the Communist Party of China, General Xu Shiyou spoke three points:
1. You have chosen me as the deputy director of the Central Advisory Committee, and I am the deputy director who does not "care" and "asks" the second;
2. I asked the Party Central Committee for leave and found a few people to help me write my memoirs;
3. I don't live in Beijing, I want to live in Nanjing.
General Xu Shiyou's remarks undoubtedly revealed the idea of "retreating," and later, General Xu Shiyou also submitted a report to the party Central Committee and the Central Military Commission.
In the report, General Xu Shiyou asked for leave of absence and to live in Nanjing, mainly for two reasons: First, he was not adapted to the climate of Beijing; second, he planned to be dispatched by the Nanjing Military Region to help him write his memoirs.
When the report was submitted, it was quickly approved by Hua Guofeng and Deng Xiaoping, the principal responsible persons of the Central Committee and the Central Military Commission of China.
In this way, General Xu Shiyou left Beijing and came to No. 8 Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, where he once lived, on the eastern outskirts of Nanjing.
The reason why General Xu Shiyou chose to write his memoirs in Nanjing can be said to be directly related to Nie Fengzhi's tenure as commander of the Nanjing Military Region.
When he learned that General Xu Shiyou had come to Nanjing, Nie Fengzhi would visit General Xu Shiyou every three to five minutes, sometimes carrying two bottles of Moutai wine, sometimes bringing some fruits and side foods. More often than not, I don't take anything with me, or I go to chat with General Xu Shiyou, or sit by the pond and fish together.
Whenever Nie Fengzhi went out, whether it was going to Beijing for a meeting or going down to the army to inspect the work, he would always go to No. 8 Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum to visit General Xu Shiyou first, and when he returned from going out, he would also go to see General Xu Shiyou first, and then he would go home, which was already a habit for Nie Fengzhi and General Xu Shiyou.

One of the main tasks of General Xu Shiyou when he first came to Nanjing was to write memoirs, and for this reason, he proposed to Nie Fengzhi to find several people to help him write his memoirs.
Soon, Nie Fengzhi began to arrange this matter, whether it was to draw a writing team, arrange a writing plan, or solve various specific problems in the writing team's writing and life, all of which were arranged by Nie Fengzhi.
General Xu Shiyou was also very satisfied with this, when Nie Fengzhi sent his memoirs to General Xu Shiyou for review, he proposed many important revisions, and General Xu Shiyou was also assured to let him do it, and finally in general Xu Shiyou's two memoirs, there was basically Nie Fengzhi's "figure".
The reason why General Xu Shiyou and Nie Fengzhi had such a deep affection was actually from the beginning of the Jiaodong War of Resistance.
The two were originally brave and fearless generals, and on the battlefield, both of them were attracted by the way the other dared to say and do on the battlefield, and in this way, the relationship between General Xu Shiyou and Nie Fengzhi in the Jiaodong War of Resistance developed by leaps and bounds.
After that, General Xu Shiyou became Nie Fengzhi's superior, and General Xu Shiyou was also very good at using the general's talents, as long as it was a large-scale battle he led and commanded, General Xu Shiyou would give the main offensive task to the troops led by Nie Fengzhi to take the lead, which was enough to see General Xu Shiyou's trust and love for Nie Fengzhi.

In August 1945, after Japan announced its unconditional surrender, Chiang Kai-shek of the Kuomintang, in order to seize the fruits of the victory of the War of Resistance, implemented his established policy of being powerless to eliminate the armed forces led by the Communist Party of China.
Faced with this serious situation, the CPC Central Committee made a series of major decisions, including the deployment of the northeast, and at the Seventh National Congress of the CPC in the same year, Chairman Mao put forward the strategic task of seizing the northeast.
In September, the Central Committee of China instructed the Shandong Sub-Bureau and the Shandong Military Region to draw a total of 25,000 to 30,000 troops from four divisions and disperse them through the sea route into the northeast.
Nie Fengzhi, who was then the commander of the 5th Division of the Jiaodong Military Region, was identified by the Central Military Commission as one of the candidates to lead his troops into the northeast, but Xu Shiyou, the commander of the Jiaodong Military Region at that time, was left in Shandong by the Central Military Commission.
Just as Nie Fengzhi was preparing to lead his troops to set off, he suddenly received a summons order from commander Xu Shiyou, who told him not to go to the northeast and to continue to stay in the Shandong battlefield.
After Nie Fengzhi heard General Xu Shiyou's words, he was confused, and he obviously had the order of the Central Military Commission, so why did he suddenly change it? However, Nie Fengzhi did not ask more questions, but listened to General Xu Shiyou's words and stayed.
After a long time, during a conversation between the two generals, Nie Fengzhi found out that General Xu Shiyou was reluctant to let him leave, and there was no reason not to let him go to the northeast, so Xu Shiyou sent a telegram to the Central Military Commission in the name of the leader of the Jiaodong Military Region, saying that Nie Fengzhi was suffering from acute tuberculosis and was in the "open period." On the one hand, he needed rest and treatment, and the other side was very contagious, and suggested that another cadre should go.
After seeing the telegram sent by General Xu Shiyou, the Central Military Commission replied with the telegram and agreed, so it sent another cadre forward.
But in fact, Nie Fengzhi was not ill, and the contents of the telegram were only "fabricated" by General Xu Shiyou who was reluctant to love the general and leave him, and in order to be able to leave a member of the general, he openly "concealed" the Central Military Commission, which is rare in the history of the People's Liberation Army.
General Xu Shiyou's heavy use of Nie Fengzhi was not only reflected in "bothering" to keep him by his side, but also in Nie Fengzhi's "tampering" with operational decisions, which was supported by General Xu Shiyou.
In August 1948, the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China (CMC) established the policy of "attacking and aiding" the city of Jinan, which was fortified by 110,000 Kuomintang troops, and determined that the operation to capture Jinan City would be commanded by Xu Shiyou, commander of the Shandong Corps under the East China Field Army.
In accordance with the instructions of the Central Military Commission of the CPC Central Committee, the East China Field Army formed a siege corps of 140,000 people, determined to divide into two groups, the east and the west, with the western front as the main direction of attack.
The East Group was commanded by Nie Fengzhi, and the West Group was commanded by Song Shilun and served as the main attacker.
In the preparation stage of the campaign, Nie Fengzhi, who had the courage to deploy tasks to the troops, actually changed "assist" to "main attack."
Knowing that "chief determination" is the most important task in combat command, it is absolutely not allowed to be changed at will, and Nie Fengzhi naturally will not be unaware of this, but has his set of reasons.
He said to General Xu Shiyou: "Assists are not pretend attacks, we must really attack and do not fake attacks, treat assists as assists, and do not strengthen the strength of troops, but the mental state is different, and the assists must also be fought like the main attack, and the certainty of victory is even greater." ”
After hearing this, Xu Shiyou not only did not blame this "bold general", but said: "Just fight like this!" A knife in the west, a knife in the east, and two knives poking inwards, poking at his internal organs! ”
In this way, under Nie Fengzhi's "main attack," the defending enemy in Jinan was annihilated, Wang Yaowu was captured alive, and the Platon Army's battle of Jinan, which was heavily defended, could be said to be the prelude to a strategic decisive battle with the Kuomintang army.
In such a major battle at such a critical moment, Xu Shiyou dared to make this decision, Nie Fengzhi dared to make this suggestion, when there was an incomparable high degree of mutual understanding and trust between the two generals.

When someone said that Nie Fengzhi had problems, General Xu Shiyou said very angrily: "If he has problems, I will be responsible to Chairman Mao." ”
In 1967, General Xu Shiyou left the Nanjing Military Region, but where he went, few people knew at that time, for this matter, the commander of the Anhui Military Region also said: "At that time, the situation was so chaotic, there were so many things, we called the military region to ask for instructions and reports, and a leader could not find it." I only knew that Commander Xu was gone, and no one could figure out where he went. ”
In fact, at that time, General Xu Shiyou did not go far, he went to the army unit in Wuxi City, the predecessor of this unit was the old unit brought out by General Xu Shiyou in Jiaodong, and it was General Xu Shiyou's old subordinate who served as the commander of the army, which made him very relieved.
In this way, General Xu Shiyou lived in Wuxi for more than ten days, and when he was preparing to leave and return to Dabie Mountain, he specially summoned two people: one was Nie Fengzhi, deputy commander of the Nanjing Military Region and commander of the Air Force of the Nanjing Military Region, and Tao Yong, deputy commander of the Nanjing Military Region and commander of the East China Sea Fleet of the Navy.

"As usual, Commander Xu fried a few dishes and laid out a few bottles of wine, and did not talk about any great truth, but said quickly: 'I can't stay in Wuxi, Nanjing can't go back, I also enter dabie mountain, and you will also go with me..."After that, Commander Xu talked about his views again."
After hearing General Xu Shiyou's concern for them, Nie Fengzhi and Tao Yong were very grateful that General Xu Shiyou could think of himself under the circumstances at that time, but in order not to involve General Xu Shiyou, they politely refused the general's proposal.
General Xu Shiyou did not want to be forced, but just raised his wine glass, sighed lightly, and said again: "Everyone must take care of each other!" ”

Nie Fengzhi returned to Nanjing after separating from General Xu Shiyou, but soon he lost his whereabouts and his family suffered.
When General Xu Shiyou learned of this situation, he sent someone to find Nie Fengzhi's wife He Ming and secretly invited her to his home.
During the meal, Xu Shiyou repeatedly toasted to her and explained three things to He Ming:
"First, you have to live well; second, I know Nie Fengzhi, and the problem will definitely come to light; third, if you encounter any difficulties in the future, just come to me directly."
He Ming listened to General Xu Shiyou's words, tears fell unconsciously, in that situation at that time, General Xu Shiyou was able to personally come forward, which made He Ming very moved, which was not only an emotional comfort, but also a kind of political trust, which has been told by He Ming for more than 20 years.
Because Nie Fengzhi's family had no one to take care of, General Xu Shiyou was very concerned about them, and he once sent Nie Fengzhi's daughter Nie Meimei to Dabie Mountain as a soldier.
When Nie Meimei remembered this unforgettable experience that made her unforgettable, she said with tears in her eyes:

Uncle Xu sent someone to inform me to go to the No. 8 concentration of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and arrange for me to become a soldier, and after meeting, Uncle Xu said, 'Well, like your father, even sitting.' At that time everyone was far away from us, and hearing these words of Uncle Huber, I was so moved that I did not know what to say. ”

After Nie Meimei went to Dabie Mountain to become a soldier, she was discriminated against, and when General Xu Shiyou learned of this incident, he called her to his side, comforted her like a child for a long time, and left her for a meal.
Before leaving, General Xu Shiyou also gave Nie Meimei a match and said that he would let her take it back to play, and after going out, Nie Meimei opened it very curiously and saw that there was a living locust in the match.
It was not until 1973 that Xu Shiyou thought that the time was ripe, so he took the initiative to write a handwritten letter to the director of the General Political Department to see Nie Fengzhi, but he wrote three letters in a row, all of which were politely rejected.
This made General Xu Shiyou indignant, and finally, he directly picked up the phone and angrily rebuked: "If Nie Fengzhi has a problem with this person, I Xu Shiyou will be responsible to Chairman Mao." ”
Soon, Nie Fengzhi's problems took a turn for the better, and General Xu Shiyou and Nie Fengzhi also met again, and when Nie Fengzhi learned that his family was taken care of by General Xu Shiyou, he was very grateful.

General Xu Shiyou has always been very confident in his body, and he has said to the staff around him many times: "I have a clear mind, my hands and feet are also handy, and there is no big deal... Don't look at how many times I've been in the war and how many times I've been injured, and when you reach my age, your body may not be able to match mine. ”
But in 1985, General Xu Shiyou was already 80 years old, "life is seventy years old", he was old, but he did not obey the old.
Around the Spring Festival of the same year, General Xu Shiyou often felt vague bloating and abdominal pain, but his tolerance for pain was extremely strong, so he did not take this pain seriously.
In March, General Xu Shiyou was finally persuaded by the medical staff to go to Shanghai Huadong Hospital for a comprehensive examination, and after several months of regular examinations, a red-headed document was placed in front of the case of the leading comrades of the Nanjing Military Region, in which General Xu Shiyou's condition was diagnosed as liver cancer.
Within half a day, the leaders of the Nanjing Military Region all circulated the report, and finally, at the suggestion of Xiang Shouzhi, they decided to let General Xu Shiyou celebrate the Founding Day of the Army first, and after the festival, after the implementation of the vehicles, hospital beds, and examination and treatment work in Beijing, they first reported to Commander Nie, or asked him to come forward to do Commander Xu's work.
That night, this matter was known to Nie Fengzhi, and when he received the phone record, Nie Fengzhi read it three times from beginning to end until he read it out loud.
Nie Fengzhi felt very unfamiliar with one medical term after another, but for the concluding opinions of experts, Nie Fengzhi could not have been clearer.
Soon, Nie Fengzhi grabbed a pen and wanted to write something on the phone record, but several times he dropped the pen and mentioned it several times, but he never wrote anything, and after a long silence, he only signed a "Nie" word.
Immediately, Nie Fengzhi explained two things to the people around him:
The first was to tell Xu Shiyou's staff members, Director Tao and Secretary Zhao, the contents of the telephone, and instruct them to strengthen the care and observation of the chief's body and pay attention to keeping the condition secret; the second was to quickly inform the central advisory committee members of the Nanjing Military Region about the preliminary conclusions of the General Hospital of the Nanjing Military Region.

After a few days, Nie Fengzhi and his wife specially went to see General Xu Shiyou, General Xu Shiyou was very happy to see them, Nie Fengzhi inquired about General Xu Shiyou's physical condition, and told him that Nanjing came to the phone, the examination report came out, there was something wrong with the liver, it may be cirrhosis.
When General Xu Shiyou heard this, he did not speak, but just nodded, not seemingly surprised or nervous.
Nie Fengzhi saw General Xu Shiyou's calm appearance and carefully proposed, "After the rally, go directly from Qingdao to Beijing for further examination and treatment!" ”
When General Xu Shiyou heard this, his reaction was extremely great, and he directly said loudly: "Don't go." ”
Nie Fengzhi knew General Xu Shiyou's temper, but he still patiently persuaded that the liver problems should not be taken lightly, and Beijing's examination methods were more advanced and the treatment conditions were better, and Xu Shiyou was still stubborn and insisted on not going.
Why General Xu Shiyou was reluctant to go to Beijing for treatment has always been a mystery. Nie Fengzhi once analyzed, he said: "Commander Xu refused to go to Beijing because he was afraid that he would not be able to come back..."
On October 22, 1985, General Xu Shiyou died of illness in Nanjing at the age of 80!

After the death of General Xu Shiyou, Nie Fengzhi handled the funeral process for the old general, and during this period, Nie Fengzhi also fell ill, and the reason for his illness was half illness and half qi.
Where does qi come from? During the period of mourning, at a meeting held at Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum No. 5, a leading comrade put forward two views on the life of General Xu Shiyou: First, Xu Shiyou did not participate in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, and second, General Xu Shiyou made mistakes in the past.
Nie Fengzhi was very angry, he went against the usual norm of paying attention to etiquette in the past, left the venue, and finally under Nie Fengzhi's reasoning and arguments, he gave General Xu Shiyou the most fair evaluation under the approval of the organization.
After the death of General Xu Shiyou, General Wang Zhen asked Nie Fengzhi to write a weighty memorial article for General Xu Shiyou, and Nie Fengzhi agreed to this.
Soon, Nie Fengzhi wrote an article of nearly 9,000 words entitled "Deeply Remembering the Old Commander Xu Shiyou" based on his many years of personal experience in General Xu Shiyou's side and a large number of war history materials, which was mainly based on recalling the historical merits of General Xu Shiyou's life.
Soon after, the article was published in the "Jiefangjun Bao", but the "Jiefangjun Bao" deleted the article and changed the title to "A Generation of Courageous General Xu Shiyou", which made Nie Fengzhi angry.
Not long after that, Nie Fengzhi found that the newspapers and periodicals of the Nanjing Military Region had not published this memorial article; to know that General Xu Shiyou had a very deep love affair with Nanjing, how could Nie Fengzhi bear that the newspapers and periodicals of the Nanjing Military Region did not publish the eulogy of the old chief?
Soon, Nie Fengzhi found the person in charge of the Nanjing Military Region and angrily rebuked:
"Why didn't you publish a memorial article, and who are you targeting this attitude to?" Is it for Commander Xu, who has died of illness? Or is it directed at me? ”
Later, under the interrogation of Xiang Shouzhi, commander of the Nanjing Military Region, the "People's Front," a newspaper of the Nanjing Military Region, published the entire article entitled "Deeply Remembering the Old Commander Xu Shiyou," which satisfied Nie Fengzhi.
On April 3, 1992, General Nie Fengzhi died at the age of 79.
Throughout the lives of General Xu Shiyou and General Nie Fengzhi, General Xu Shiyou defended Nie Fengzhi at his most difficult time, and Nie Fengzhi maintained the dignity and prestige of General Xu Shiyou after the death of General Xu Shiyou.
