What is Coimbra Group?

Founded in 1985 and officially approved by the Charter in 1987, Coimbra Group (CG) is a consortium of prestigious European universities with outstanding achievements in the multidisciplinary field and a long history and a certain international prestige, selected by strict international standards. CG is committed to creating unique academic and cultural ties, establishing close cooperation and ties with allied schools, exerting excellence in disciplines and research, and promoting social progress and internationalization. At the same time, through this mutual exchange, it has a certain impact on the European education system and scientific research policy, and promotes the prosperity and development of European education.

The Coimbra Group takes its name from the University of Coimbra in Portugal – one of the oldest universities in Europe and currently includes forty European universities, known as the European Ivy League.

The Coimbra Group aims to promote the transfer of knowledge between its member schools through the exchange of teachers and students, while respecting the cultural, national and academic freedom of each school; In today's globalized context, strengthening the University's research-oriented role in the field of multidisciplinary and scientific research provides a continuous impetus for European higher education and research, while encouraging cultural, academic, sports and other cooperation and exchanges among members, making the Group a world-leading representative of excellence.

At present, the Coimbra Group comprises 40 European universities, including 3 French universities, namely the University of Montpellier, Montpellier III and the University of Poitiers.

Introduction of the institution

Montpellier III

The University of Montpellier III, also known as the famous French writer Paul Wallelli, is named after the famous French writer Paul Wallelli. It is a comprehensive university focusing on literature, languages, arts, social and human sciences, offering a large number of different educational programs to more than 20,000 students and awarding national diplomas at various levels. The university has 10 research faculties and the university also has a branch in Bezje.

The university offers more than 200 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in the fields of natural sciences, literature and art, especially in the French humanities.

Its renowned faculty of languages and cultures offers courses in English, French, German, Russian, Spanish and Chinese, and more than 3,000 foreign students from 50 different countries are engaged in teaching and research in languages around the world.

The University has two doctoral graduate schools: 14 research groups in art, literature and culture, and 16 research groups in time, space and civilization, with more than 20 different doctoral programs.

University of Montpellier

The Université de Montpellier is one of the oldest universities in the world, on a par with the University of Paris, the University of Oxford and the University of Bologna. Founded in 1137 as the first medical school in Europe, it soon became the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Letters. In 1289, the University of Montpellier was founded by Pope Nicholas IV, and the medical school is the oldest medical school to date, so Montpellier is famous for its medicine.

In 1968, the May Storm led to the dissolution of the University of Montpellier, which was divided into one, two and three majors: the first was known for research in the field of medicine, the second was mainly in the natural sciences, and the third was famous for its deep foundation in the humanities.

On January 1, 2015, with the approval of the French Ministry of Education, the University of Montpellier I and Montpellier II merged to establish the new University of Montpellier.

Poitiers University

Université de Poitiers, founded in 1431, by Pope IV and approved by a decree of King Charles VII.

From its beginnings as a seminary, ecclesiastical law, civil law, medical school and art school, Poitiers University now has 13 faculties and one higher engineering school. Popular majors include: Applied Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy, Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, Language and Literature, Humanities, Law, Economics, Business Administration, etc.

For hundreds of years, the University of Poitiers has cultivated countless academic and social elites, developed high-level scientific research in many fields, and contributed to the academic development of France and the world.
