Huang Yongyu was born in Changde County, Hunan Province in 1924, his ancestral home is Fenghuang County, Hunan Province, and he has an equally famous cousin, Shen Congwen.
When Huang Yongyu was born, Shen Congwen had already left Changde, and by the time his uncle and nephew met for the first time, Huang Yongyu was already ten years old, and at that time an adult and a child did not communicate much, until many years later, the two became lifelong confidants who supported each other in a turbulent world.
