How artificial intelligence is leading the way in new trends in automotive design
Artificial intelligence is one of the hottest topics of 2023, bringing new solutions and innovation opportunities to various industries through machine learning technology. The automotive industry is no exception, with many companies already using AI technology to optimize the tasks of their R&D departments.
Toyota also announced that it will conduct AI-based vehicle design research with the help of generative artificial intelligence technology developed by the Toyota Research Institute (TRI). That doesn't mean your next Toyota will be designed entirely by artificial intelligence. Instead, Toyota aims to apply the technology in the early design phase, generating multiple iterations for a project, depending on the engineering requirements.
"Generative AI tools are often used as a source of inspiration for designers, but they can't handle the complex engineering and safety issues found in actual car design," said Avinash Balachandran, director of TRI's Human Interactive Driving (HID) division. "This technology combines Toyota's traditional engineering prowess with the advanced capabilities of modern generative AI."
At the same time, BMW is also experimenting with using artificial intelligence to create car design concepts. The Bavarian company is still experimental, but says AI will soon be involved in all aspects of the design of upcoming production vehicles. Of course, there's no need to worry – BMW will never let AI completely dominate the design process.
