On June 22, in Ponta Cana, Dominica, the FIVB Management Committee approved the volleyball calendar for the 2025-2028 Olympic cycle, confirmed that the World Championships will be changed to biennial, and approved the qualification method for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The biennial World Championships will begin in 2025. The tournament will be expanded to 32 teams, with a group stage + single-elimination tournament. The 32 teams are divided into 8 groups, with the top two in each group advancing to the round of 16, before being eliminated in single elimination until the champion is produced.
The 32 teams will also be selected: one for the host and one for the defending champions, 15 for the top three continental championships on five continents, and the remaining 15 will be selected through the world rankings at the end of the national team season the year before the World Championships. If there are multiple hosts, the number of world ranked teams will be reduced accordingly.
The qualification for Los Angeles 2028 is completely different from the Paris Olympics! The 12 participating teams of the Los Angeles Olympics are automatically selected for the Middle East Champions, the United States, and the champions of the continental championships on each of the five continents in 2026 will receive one place; The top four (those who have not previously qualified) at the 2027 World Championships will each receive 1 place; The final two seats will be determined through the world rankings.
