According to the official website of the School of Archaeology and Archaeology of Peking University, Liu Xu, professor of the School of Archaeology and Archaeology of Peking University, director of the Xia Shang Archaeology Professional Committee of the Chinese Archaeological Society, and famous archaeologist, died in Beijing at 0:43 on September 26, 2021 at the age of 72 due to ineffective medical treatment.

Mr. Liu Xu was born in March 1949 in Guangling County, Shanxi Province. He graduated from the Department of History of Peking University in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in archaeology, and in the same year entered the Shanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Work Committee, where he served as the deputy leader of the Shanxi Provincial Archaeological Task Force. In 1983, he graduated from the Department of History of Peking University with a master's degree in archaeology and stayed on to teach. He was promoted to professor in 1999 and was hired as a doctoral supervisor in the same year. He was the vice dean and party secretary of the School of Archaeology and Archaeology of Peking University.

The Jinhou cemetery, which he excavated together with Sun Hua, Xu Tianjin and comrades of the Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology, unearthed a large number of gorgeous and exquisite jade, bronze ceremonial vessels and other funerary items, which provided important physical materials for confirming the founding fiefdoms of the Jin State in the Western Zhou Dynasty and the historical research of the Jin Dynasty, and was later rated as one of the top ten archaeological discoveries in the country in 1992.

Mr. Liu Xu's long-term main research direction is Xia Shang Zhou archaeology and field archaeology, and he has participated in and undertaken important topics such as the excavation of the Tianma-Qucun site and the source exploration project of Chinese civilization. During his teaching period, he taught courses such as "Xia Shang Zhou Archaeological Research" (graduate students), "Chinese Archaeology (Middle)", and "General Theory of Archaeology" (undergraduate). He is the author of "Jin Culture", "Archaeology of Xia Shang Zhou" and other works.
