Construction management in Japan has always been a benchmark in the industry, but Udon chose to leave after two and a half years on the job.

I'm Udon, I'm 29 years old. I currently live in Yokohama, Japan. After graduating from high school in 12 years and coming to Japan for university, I stayed in Japan to work after graduating in 17 years, and this year is my seventh year working in Japan.

At first, I didn't want to do architecture-related work, but what I wanted to do at first was to design exhibitions that matched my university major. But like many people who come to Japan for university, my English is not very good, and the exhibition design company did not ask me.

In search of more opportunities, Udon expanded her resume submissions, and soon after, she received her first offer from a construction company.

After joining the company, there was a three-month training and internship period, starting from how to hand out business cards, learning to make tables and make reports. In the second month or so, the boss will talk to everyone about which branch and department to assign to later. I originally applied for this company because I wanted to do design, but when I was asked if I wanted to do construction, I started thinking about it at that moment.

In Japan, as in China, there are not enough construction personnel, and the turnover rate is relatively high, especially there are few female students. From around 17 or 18, because the gender ratio was too large, the Japanese construction industry began to reform to create a better working environment for women. Until then, if you don't take the initiative, the company won't send girls to the scene.

When I finally decided to go, it was based on some information I found on the Internet, including seeing that the salary of construction management and the development prospects of the industry were OK. I also think that if I came to Japan alone, it doesn't matter where I live, and my better friends have returned to China, I will definitely make new friends and go to a new place. And I think there should be very few foreign girls who can have this kind of work experience, so maybe it's good to experience it.

As a newcomer, where you are assigned to the project, it is completely random.

Udon's first project was a logistics and warehousing building for a paper product company, at the foot of Mt. Fuji.

The day he first entered the scene was also Udon's first day at the age of 24.

When I went on my first day, the construction site was in a very early stage and just beginning to dig ground. My first thought was -- it's so big. The entire construction site area is about 20,000-30,000 square meters.

My very real first reaction was that I don't have to be outside to work here regardless of wind or rain, and it should probably be quite hard. But when they all come, they are actually quite excited.

The site is rectangular, with the office at the very corner, next to a makeshift two-story shed where workers rest. Next to the parking lot, I got out of our boss's car and my boss called the director, and I was standing there. Because it was time for break, they all had to walk in front of me. I was already wearing management overalls at that time, so the workers could see that I was the management person, and they would all stare at me and look at me a little bit.

In the early days, there were only thirty or forty workers, all of whom laid the foundation in the early stage. They all look relatively lean, and their overall age is around 40 years old. I heard them afterwards because there were really few girls on the construction site, after all, the ratio of men to women was 9:1, and I looked small and stood there silly, and everyone was curious at the time.

■ Project schedule

Although Udon had taken several courses in architectural theory at school, she had no knowledge of building construction.

After starting his formal work, the only resources available to Udon were four atlases issued by the company, a quality control specification manual, and a senior brother who taught. Fortunately, these resources are reliable enough to give her very practical help.

The drawing set is like a baton handed over by the design department to the construction department, and the quantity and model of all materials will be clearly marked in the drawing set. The specification manual, further developed by the company in accordance with national standards, is the basis for all their management behaviors.

Udon's construction management team, consisting of seven directors and deputy directors, is responsible for managing the entire project, from the time materials are ordered to the end of all processes.

The director is responsible for the coordination of all affairs and has the right to decide all engineering projects on site. The deputy director is mainly responsible for the adjustment of the construction period. In addition to these two, there are five of us, each of whom will be responsible for a major part, such as scaffolding, concrete, a turnip and a pit.

There are some words on the construction site, which are unique abbreviations, and cannot be found on the Internet. I can only write it down as soon as I hear a word I don't understand, and then ask someone else. Ask what it means, and then cross it out. In the first two or three months of work, I used two or three notebooks. Every day, like a sponge that has been squeezed dry, it is suddenly thrown into the bathtub and frantically absorbs water.

This line of work as a whole doesn't seem to be very taught, because 99% of the questions you want to ask can be found in the manual. If you don't know what to do, just look for a manual. For example, problems such as how many meters to control the height of the ground, how many turns to weld the steel bar, etc., are all in the manual. At that time, our director also said that if we could remember all this QC manual in mind, we would not encounter any problems.

My manual has actually been turned over by me, because I read too much, I also broke it into many small parts and rebound it, so that it is thinner and easier for me to carry with me.

According to the Japanese name, the chief, the second, then the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh seats, I am the last seat, which is equivalent to the eldest brother of three seats and keeps taking me. My eldest brother will tell me that if I just rely on this booklet to check the value at any time, I will not be able to understand the reason behind it, and I will rely more and more on it, and I will not remember it in my head. Later, I put it in the office, and I didn't bring it with me when I went out of the scene, and every time I returned to the office from the scene, I glanced at it slowly, and I remembered it.

During the training, the content of the teacher in three months was not as much as what I wrote down in the two days I actually went to the site. Because after the real arrival, the feeling is particularly strong, the excavators are walking around, and the workers are all very real around you. During the training, I did not have such a strong sense of presence, nor a sense of crisis, nor in fact, a sense of responsibility.

The freshness of young people when they first entered the construction site was quickly extinguished by the hard work of outdoor work. The new group of people that everyone built together during the training began to frequently report resignations after the first month passed.

The quality management of construction is completed through the synchronous supervision of the whole process. To ensure that the results of each step are within the tolerance, construction managers measure and confirm simultaneously at each process. Different types of building components also need to be photographed and archived in time.

So most of the time, udon was like the workers, shuttling to every corner of the construction site.

In fact, there are many things to shoot, foundations, steel bars, concrete, steel structures, after the steel structure is the ground of each floor, and then the exterior wall... The order in which we take pictures is actually equivalent to following the workers.

After I entered the construction site, the first time I felt too hard and tired was in the summer three or four months later. At that time, steel bars had just been laid, and there was nothing to shade the whole site. The weather forecast is 30 degrees, and the body temperature can be 40 degrees. The ground is either soil or iron plate, and if you walk on the iron plate, you feel that the sole plate will be scorched.

To be honest, I regretted it at first, and after more than a month when everyone became acquainted, I would often be told by the workers, why are you a little girl coming to the construction site so tired, their preconceived idea is that girls must not be able to do this job, it must not be as hard as boys... I don't like this statement, for example, on the construction site we sometimes need to help scaffolding workers move steel bars, for example, these three-meter long steel bars, maybe boys can move two or three at a time, I can only move one at a time. But I only have to move twice or three times, and I can be like them. I don't think I'm inferior to them, in fact, it's a state of "not competing for steamed buns, fighting for breath".

When there are only beams on the floor, if you want to confirm something, you need to walk on it. The width is only about 20 cm, and neither foot can be side by side. On the beams, a certain sense of balance is required, because the wind is strong above. Although I was wearing a seat belt and would be suspended even if I fell, it was really scary. I actually almost slipped a few times, and when I finally walked, I only dared to squat and walk. But this is not a thing that I can not go if I am afraid, only overcome my fear. But in the end, I dared to climb up and down.

As the aura of newcomers fades, Udon is responsible for more and more independent work, and communication and coordination become an important part of the work.

Unlike in China, there are few husbands and wives on Japanese construction sites, and in Udon's construction site, colleagues and supervisors, including workers from more than 20 types of work involved in the project, are all men. Except for a Japanese aunt who sells rice and snacks, there is only one girl in Udon.

Big brothers usually communicate violently and directly.

In order for the management to run smoothly, Udon must find a way to get along with these big brothers.

In fact, the workers in Japanese construction companies, I think everyone should not be the underworld, but they are all big brothers in the mixed society. 90% of them are older than me, so I should be sweet and angry. When negotiating and communicating with workers, praise others when they should be praised, for example, the other party is a 50-year-old uncle, he is praised by an equally 50-year-old uncle for his good skills in tiling, and a girl in his 20s praises him, this state is completely different. After praising him, he would immediately say, "How, look!" Then he showed me, "Would you like to give it a try?"

There are all kinds of people among the workers, some have good tempers, and some have bad tempers. If you don't say a good word in three or five sentences, he may start yelling at you. Sometimes I will yell back, but sometimes I can't yell back. The other party will crackle for a long time, and when I am in front of them, I will still act like "I have someone above me, I'll find someone..." But in fact, as I walked, I would walk to my aunt's commissary and start crying.

At that time, my aunt's commissary was a small secret base for me. At that time, the places that allowed me to relax a little were the women's toilet and the other was the small corner of the aunt's shop. My aunt wouldn't ask me what was going on, but I usually couldn't help but start complaining myself. At this time, the work in my aunt's hands will not stop, she just listens, and when it is time to reply, she will give me something back. She would bring me a cup of coffee or milk tea, and she didn't want my money, so she kept me drinking. At lunch, I will also put a little more meat, for fear that everyone will see it, it will not be placed on the top, but in the middle of white rice.

Walking out of his aunt's supply station, Udon will collect his emotions and return to the state of a manager again.

Although she tries to be as sweet as possible when she asks for help, she never shows weakness when it comes to managing workers.

Slowly, Udon found that as long as he found the right switch to open, he could turn on the other side of the workers, and this switch was "hobby".

The worker I have the best relationship with is a scaffolding big brother. At first, he had a bit of a condescending attitude, opening and closing his mouth, "Don't underestimate me, I'm very good." You little girl in your 20s, you can't do it..."

Later, I found out that he gave me a nickname, which translates to Chinese - Devil Chinese Sister. Because I didn't quite fit their impression of girls at that time, most Japanese girls still have a soft personality. But I think if I'm right, I'll always be tough with them.

The eldest brother drove very fast when he used a forklift to move things. Our speed in the field was below 10 kilometers per hour, but he drove a forklift and flew the same. Once I was angry, I told him, "You're not racing outside, why are you driving so fast?" What if I hit someone!" He said, "Because I have to hurry, otherwise I won't be able to catch up with today." Why do you talk so much nonsense, you have to take care of me in everything!"

Later, I heard his workers mention that his wife had died very early, that he was alone with two small children, and that he was very kind to children. I slowly changed my opinion of him.

I was a little scared at first, but later found out that he was a big brother with a very contrasting face. He actually likes BigBang (a Korean boy singing group), including his bags.

I actually have a very obvious feeling that these Japanese people in their forties and fifties do not take getting married and having children as a must, but they take hobbies very seriously. One of the hobbies of many workers is still fitness, doing physical work every day, and going to the gym at night after work. I like to raise dogs, I like Korean beans, I like fishing... If the wages of workers were high, they had an annual income of 2.3 million yuan at that time, so they would buy a small boat by themselves, and all the money would be spent on fishing.

Workers from different companies and different types of jobs often hang out together in private because of their hobbies. But they drink and eat, generally within the workers themselves, people who will not take us construction management, unless they have a good relationship, they will occasionally be shouted. I've been called three times in total, and I was very happy to be shouted.

Because I like Japanese songs from the 80s and 90s, I can still sing with those uncles and uncles. When playing together, they also brag about famous buildings they have made with their own hands, such as "I put the tiles on the flower bed at the entrance of Tokyo Disney". He will also ask me, "Are you all only children in China, won't your parents worry too much if you don't return to China?" You're also in your 20s, do you have a boyfriend? It's too hard to work in Japan..."

I feel that the relationship with everyone is good, but the night before we drank and sang together, and the next day everyone returned to their usual work state, like how happy they were last night, and they won't talk about anything again. I was a little stunned, feeling that I was the only one who was quite happy. But after a few days of appointment, it was happy again, so I repeated it two or three times, and I got used to it. I thought OK, everyone works when they work, and don't talk about other things.

Rules everywhere

Not only are the workers like cogs in their place as soon as they enter the construction site, everyone and everything on the construction site is regulated by a strict set of rules, and the refined management of the Japanese construction site will penetrate into every detail of the construction site.

Therefore, unlike most people's imagination, construction sites in Japan tend to be neat and orderly.

There will also be a type of slogan called 5S everywhere on the construction site, and the 5 S correspond to - tidying, rectifying, cleaning, cleaning and literacy.

"Cleanliness" is "outer beauty", and "literacy" is "inner beauty".

In the words of our superiors, "If you don't pay attention in small places, you may make mistakes in big places."

The triangular cone should be divided into color swings, red is prohibited, green is allowed, and yellow is attention. I think I can mix and hold it, but their rule is that they must be divided into three piles according to the color and completely separated. Because I don't pay much attention to this kind of thing sometimes, I get talked about a lot.

The location of each type of work on the site is fixed, and the common building materials must also be arranged in categories. The placement position of each type of work has us placed a triangular cone to delimit the range, if I find materials such as steel structure workers in the material placement area of the shelf workers, I will remind the steel structure workers. Every day, in the area where they are constructed, the garbage must also be taken away, and if some debris or dirty things are left in the area, it is completely forbidden for people to leave.

When painting, it will drip to the ground more or less, and we usually spread some unused cloth on the ground. But one day after brushing the paint of the ceiling beams, because the paint was light gray, the concrete floor was also light gray, and it dripped to the ground and was not found. When the deputy director found out during the inspection of the venue, he called me and came up and asked, "They ruined the scene like this, so they let them go?" Call them back!"

Sometimes I feel that Japan's "5S" concept is a bit of an inversion of the cart before the horse, the iron plate has to be rinsed with a high-pressure water gun every day, and the simple fence on the periphery is wiped by the security guard every day, which is really confusing. But overall it was really clean.

At that time, because I was often said to be the messiest in the firm, I took a small note and wrote, "Did you pay attention to the cleanliness of the site today?" Stick to the shelf directly in front of my eyes.

■ On-site material placement

Udon's strict requirements for finishing and cleaning in Japanese construction sites have really improved efficiency, and udon has always been skeptical.

But when it comes to safety management, she has learned a lot of lessons.

In the environment of the construction site, any small mistake can lead to danger.

Strict norms of conduct are both a red line and a guarantee.

We would do radio drills before the morning meeting, and then work in pairs, pointing at each other and confirming "Hard hat, OK!" Seat belts, OK! Costumes, OK! Shoes, OK!" That's it OK for a lap. I initially thought that these were very superficial things, and everyone was casual, but in fact everyone was very serious. Those who are not serious are foreigners like me, and they basically have to be told by the people above before they are serious.

In the early days, when I wasn't too independent of the big parts, one of my main jobs was to make slogans. They are all "there is an opening here", "no entry" type, and "no entry" requires an A3 piece of paper with one word, red and particularly large. In short, how conspicuous how to come, hang in various places every day.

In fact, in those two years, not only me, but almost all the injuries on the scene were caused by irregular operations.

I remember once, after the steel bar was welded, the surface had cooled and looked black like other steel bars, but the temperature was actually very high. It was mandatory to wear the specified thick gloves, but I walked over with a pair of protective gloves of that kind of cloth. I usually used to go wherever I went, and when I asked the workers about affairs, I put my hand on the freshly welded steel bar, and the next second, the whole scene of 30,000 square meters can hear my wailing, it really hurts.

So that's how I wandered freely, with a bunch of big injuries and small injuries. But I'm more afraid of other people getting hurt, and I don't want to see others hurt even if I hurt a small injury.

Moving a large crane in the construction site stipulates that the iron plate must be laid first, and the movement on the iron plate must be very careful. But once at night, twenty or thirty meters without laying iron plates, I asked the workers at that time, "Isn't this impossible", but the workers should leave work at five o'clock on weekdays, and at seven or eight o'clock, they rushed home and said to me, "It's okay, we've been driving on the soil many times, it's really okay." I believed it and moved.

When I had already walked twenty or thirty meters without an iron plate and moved to the next iron plate, I heard the director shouting "What are you doing!" from the balcony of the temporary office. I immediately panicked and immediately ran to the office to explain. The director said, "Don't you know that you have to walk on an iron plate!" I said, "Yes, but the workers, they say they often walk where there is no iron plate," and the director became even more angry when he heard me say this: "You believe whatever people say?" What should I do if something happens? What if a 100-ton crane falls down and hits people?" I really had a fluke mentality that time, so after being told by the director, the more I thought about it, the more I was afraid.

Endless surprises

In fact, the risks that can be avoided through internal standardized operations on the construction site are limited, and various unexpected situations that cannot be controlled by manpower are staged every day.

What construction managers can do is to respond in a timely manner when every emergency occurs, minimizing the impact on the schedule and budget.

Every time at this time, it is also the time when udon is most stressful.

I remember once when the concrete was pouring, it was raining. So after the iron plate was driven back and forth by the concrete mixer truck, one piece collapsed, and as a result, one of the tires of the car fell into the soil. Because the concrete couldn't stop for long when it was pouring, I went around the site to find someone who was certified to drive an excavator, and finally found a foreman of the company responsible for paving the road.

In fact, that picture will be a little funny, it is raining heavily and there is mud everywhere, and then the eldest brother is wearing a suit on the upper body, pants with overalls, and rain boots, driving an excavator to help me dig the soil, and then hooking the iron plate back.

At that time, I panicked because once I stopped, either 90 minutes or 120 minutes, the concrete would clump. Once lumps appear, if there is only one seam at the beginning, a large circle around the seam must be knocked out in the end and poured again. Like the corresponding steel bar or something, it will be extended, which is very troublesome.

And everyone is staring at you, because I am in charge of coordinating all the work, not only to liaise with the concrete manufacturer, but also to direct the workers, and at the same time to control the thickness and height of the cement. Every few concrete cars, we also have to sample for experiments, and we live a lot, so we were really busy.

However, there is no way to avoid various emergencies, such as car accidents and traffic jams on the delivery road. I encountered a time when something came in and the concrete was unqualified, and a car was unqualified, which is equivalent to that batch is unqualified. The design strength specification is to be between 18~22, and finally when they came, it was 17.8, 17.9, but it was not 18. The price 5 years ago was 3500-4000 yuan for a car, and I went back to 10 cars that day that I was not qualified, which is equivalent to 40,000 yuan a day and it is gone.

I had nightmares the night before every important concrete pour, like swimming in a pool and then the water turned to concrete, and I collapsed. Otherwise, I was drinking milk tea, and drinking milk tea would have turned into concrete.

Changeable weather will bring various troubles to construction.

Even on weekends, all engineering managers, including Udon, are always ready and on call.

The divorce rate in the industry is high, and although Udon was single at the time, his whole life was touched by the slightest touch of the construction site.

Even if you don't make mistakes, other people's mistakes will affect you, even if we don't make mistakes, workers don't make mistakes, what if the weather makes mistakes? There's no way, right?

Once the weather forecast was for a typhoon the next day, but the storm had already begun that night. In this case, we have to cover everything on the site with a blue tarp in time, and the four corners of the tarp need to be pressed with cement blocks.

The fire sink is to be put in before paving the asphalt, so a pit larger than the fire sink will be dug to put the fire sink in. At that time, one corner of the tarp on the fire sink was blown off, and there was only a ring of temporary handrails around it, a meter away from the fire sink, and there was a height difference. The eldest brother said that he was going to jump over and let me look at the seat belt, and his seat belt was hanging on the temporary armrest, and I was pulling it over there. The temporary handrail was made of steel pipes, and I was particularly afraid that he would push too hard, and it was already past nine o'clock at night, the wind and rain were very strong, and the ground was slippery.

He jumped and jumped, but his middle foot slipped a bit, and I was scared to death. But the eldest brother, like a nobody, immediately turned around and beckoned to me to throw the sandbag. I didn't dare to get too close, especially for fear of a collapse in the area of the handrail. When this happens on the construction site, it is impossible to say that I am afraid and will not go to it. The next day we were also waiting at the office, because the most fearful thing was a third-party accident, in case something in the construction site was blown out and hit a passerby outside.

I really don't have a day when I can be completely at ease. Even when I returned home on a long vacation, I would pay attention to the weather forecast and worry about the construction site if the weather was bad. And we also have a disaster prevention safety education every day, once there are other safety accidents on the site, whether it is the same company or other companies including the news seen on the Internet, everyone will print it on paper, and every morning meeting, evening party must be taken out. It is necessary to analyze the causes of accidents and how to prevent them.

I usually have nightmares at night after hearing about these accidents, in which the ground collapses, the steel bar falls, I am also falling, and I wake up with a boom. The moment I woke up was very uncomfortable, sometimes, even in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, within five to ten seconds of just waking up, I couldn't tell whether it was a dream or something that really happened.

Then I felt that I might not be a good fit for this type of work.

The nature of work that cannot be relaxed at all times is like the airtight deep sea, and Udon will take a big breath at the first opportunity to surface, seeking relaxation and stimulation in life.

During that time, she was accustomed to vindictive consumption, and also began to chase crazy stars, the more tired she was on weekdays, the higher she let herself be on her days off.

The ever-expanding pressure, finally, exploded one day.

It was during a waterproof test in the winter, and Udon kept his handle in the test pool to salvage clogged rubber balls. The icy coldness of the pool wasn't the worst experience she'd had in a long time, but Udon was sure that it was the last moment that broke her psychological defenses.

A week later, she offered her resignation.

In two and a half years, Udon completed his career on the construction site. On the day the building was completed and the scaffolding was removed, she stood there alone and watched for a long time.

For the first time, you can feel a building "bang" appear in front of you. I used to climb up and down this building a dozen or twenty times a day, but it wasn't until the scaffolding was removed that I could see the whole building directly for the first time, including its design and color matching. And from the outside, I obviously can't see some small mistakes in construction, but I always want to stare at the mistakes I know, and there is a magical feeling that no one else knows, only I know.

And after the end of each site, there will be a summary meeting, and the director will conclude how many workers and how many man-hours were spent on this site, although I can't remember the number now, but it is all tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands. At that time, I would sigh that the site of more than 30,000 square meters, I walked from the northeast corner to the southwest corner, and it took more than 10 minutes to walk, such a large building was really made by the workers little by little.

In order to ensure that there were no scratches on the floor and walls, we wore indoor shoes indoors, and we would pick up any confetti immediately. But when it was finally delivered to Party A, because it was a logistics building, I saw those people driving forklifts and wearing big rubber boots, and they didn't care at all. Our director also told me that for people, it was just a warehouse, but for us, it really witnessed it from the wasteland to the building. Of course, our feelings for this building are completely different from Party A, so let's just get used to it.

■ Completed building

After I changed jobs, I occasionally dreamed about the past, most of them were not nightmares, but I still dreamed about the water in the pool turning into concrete. I feel that concrete for me, probably forever tormenting me in a dark little corner of my heart. No, I can't say that, it actually doesn't torture me anymore, it's just a memory of the past, there.

When I pass by the construction site now, I will look at the sign on the construction site, because it will say which company, the construction period, and the construction content will be written on it. The exterior walls of the construction site usually have cracks, and I will look through the cracks to see what is going on inside. I now have a construction site in front of my house where steel bars are being laid, and I basically look at it while walking every time I pass by, walk over, and look back at the state again.

At the first site, there was heavy snowfall, which meant that work could only be stopped that day, so many workers did not come. The workers who came did not have much work to do, and they began to drive forklifts, excavators that could drive excavators, and everyone began to sweep snow together, sweeping and sweeping everyone began to play blindly.
