She wrote Salinger a note saying, "I'm not a girl who wants to invade her privacy," and she claimed she wanted to write but was in trouble, wondering if Salinger was still writing. She even described herself as a tall, green-eyed, red-blond-haired girl who had read The Catcher of the Wheat Field many times. She added: "I won't try to find you anymore, not because of your watchdog or tall fence, but because I don't want to provoke you." I can totally understand why you live in this area, it's so beautiful. ”

Part of their conversations and interactions, recorded in The Paris Review, tells the story of some disrespectful but interesting thoughts about Epes about his drinking habits and Salinger's hair. The conversation lasted 27 minutes, and the tape was placed on Epes's safe, without anyone else knowing.

Over the years, many people wanted to buy the recording, but All of them were rejected by Epes. She told Bloomberg: "I regret it a few years after meeting him, very, very much regret it. She added: "I wake up in the middle of the night feeling like I've 'stolen' Salinger's voice, it's like stealing his soul. So I can't give or sell that tape to anyone else. So she also decided to destroy the recording with her body after her death, so that saling the privacy of Salinger would not be violated.
