However, there are still some places worth discussing and explaining the ending of this movie, so I will briefly break down the plot of the entire movie.
Let's start with the crew of the expensive INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION, Kate (mission commander of the space station), David (space station medical officer), Lowry (space station engineer), Murakami (systems engineer), Hugh (space biologist), and Miranda (space station quarantine chief).
The temporary team of six needs to complete an important task: to conduct the first close-up study in human history of samples of Martian soil brought back by the Pilgrim 7 Martian rover in orbit.

During the course of his research, Hugh successfully isolated a dormant single-celled organism from the soil of Mars, and when Hugh adjusted the atmospheric composition of the incubator to resemble that of the ancient Earth, a miracle occurred and the creature began to show vitality.
This detail is interesting, indicating that the atmospheric environment of Mars in the past was similar to that of ancient Earth, and if this is the case, it is a hint that there is probably a lot of life on Mars in the past.
This was the first time in human history that there was conclusive evidence of contact with an extraterrestrial being, and when they finally asked the world for the name of this creature, they chose the name Calvin (well, it is very American indeed).
Calvin here is not the name of the famous physicist (Kelvins), but an allusion to the 16th-century Protestant reformer Jean Calvin.
As Calvin continued to grow in the dish, he soon changed from a single-celled organism to a complex multicellular structure, and then evolved into a visible form with the naked eye, and even changed his own physical structure with changes in the external environment, which was amazing; but further research found a more frightening fact, Calvin is not an organism composed of single cell divisions, but a complex life body composed of a large number of homogeneous cells through synergy. That is to say, every cell in Calvin can play the same role, such as light sensitivity, muscle movement, and even transmit electrical signals for thinking.
In Miranda's words, Calvin is an all-muscle, all-brain, all-eye, almost Christian language to describe God.

In the course of the experiment that followed, Miranda noticed Hugh's emotional dependence on Calvin that transcended reason, as if he really saw Calvin as his own child. It was at this point that Hugh, who was obsessed with it, inevitably made the first mistake, causing the experimental environment to be changed rapidly, and out of a natural defense mechanism, Calvin put himself into a deep dormant state.
In order to wake calvin, Hugh makes another fatal mistake: using an electric shock rod to stimulate Calvin's body, hoping to reactivate its homogeneous cells. This did wake calvin up, but it also infuriated it completely (imagine how it feels to have someone stab you with an electric shock stick while you sleep).
So Calvin twisted Hugh's palm, pierced the glove with the sharp rupture of the electric shock baton and escaped from the closed incubator, and it quickly aimed at a rat bound in the laboratory. We can see how quickly it deconstructs and digests the entire mouse, and we can clearly see how much it's growing in size.

At this time, Rory enters the laboratory to try to snatch Hugh out of the coma, but he does not expect to become the first human to be killed by Calvin. Although Rory used an incinerator to try to burn Calvin to death before this, this didn't seem to work for it at all.
It is strange why such a handheld incinerator appears in such a strict closed experimental environment.
After Rory's death, his body took on the shape of a cross, and Calvin, who had developed into an adult in his body, escaped from the laboratory using a fire extinguishing system from the ceiling.
Next, the entire crew of the space station seemed to be all INTELLIGENT offline, one mistake after another was made, and commander Kate's communicator, which was anxious to repair the fault, was attacked by Calvin outside the cabin. Because the coolant of the spacesuit was squeezed from the outside, causing the helmet to be filled with liquid, Kate was actually drowned alive.
Not to mention whether the space suit really needs such a large amount of coolant, which is actually concentrated in the helmet without gravity.
They then ran out of propellant to prevent Calvin from returning to the station (causing the station to lose the opportunity to self-regulate its posture).
Then the crowd decided to evacuate the oxygen of the entire space station and choke Calvin alive (Hugh believes that as a carbon-based lifeform, Calvin is inseparable from oxygen like humans), but everyone is busy for half a day, only to find that Calvin has been lying on Hugh's disabled leg and sucking his flesh and blood.
In fact, just as everyone was closing the cabin, Calvin had already sneaked up on Hugh and was hovering over his leg. There is considerable controversy about this part of the plot, with the view that Hugh actually knew that Calvin was on his lap and that he had deliberately concealed this fact out of curiosity about the creature; but another view that Hugh did not know that the gravityless environment and disabled legs combined with too much self-blame made him ignore what happened to him.
<h1 class="pgc-h-center-line" > the third isolation scheme</h1>
Finally, due to the failure of the first and second isolation schemes (incubators and laboratories), the third isolation scheme was launched to push the entire space station out of Earth's orbit and prevent extraterrestrial organisms from having the opportunity to enter Earth.
This seems to be a reasonable plan, the problem is that of all the astronauts, only Miranda knows about this isolation plan, causing Murakami to mistakenly believe that the Soyuz who came to push away from the space station is a rescue spacecraft; and he actually opened the connection module between the Soyuz and the space station in spite of the quarantine procedure.
This series of errors put the entire space station into attenuation orbit, and instead of being pushed away from Earth, it was about to fall into the atmosphere with Calvin. David and Miranda made a final effort to stop all this by using the station's two escape modules. David plans to use an oxygen candle to lure Calvin into an escape module with him, where he internally steers his thrust away from Earth's orbit, while Miranda can return to Earth in a second escape module.
At the end, David does succeed in locking Calvin and himself into an escape pod, but when the two escape pods are catapulted out, Miranda's cabin is hit by debris from the space station, causing it to deviate from the orbit, and the yin and yang make Miranda be pushed into deep space; while David is in the escape pod, his hand is caught by Calvin, and there is no way to manipulate the power direction of the escape module, but instead he and Calvin return to Earth.
Finally, to explain why Calvin didn't kill David Jordan, there is a theory that David spent too much time on the space station (more than a year) and that the amount of radiation in his body was about to exceed the limit of what he could tolerate (Miranda mentioned at the beginning of the film). Calvin is very sensitive to radiation, and in his eyes David's body is not suitable for consumption, so at the end of the film David is only bound by Calvin's grown limbs and not killed.
