Lanius meridionalis is slightly smaller than Greyberau , darker in color , and prefers to inhabit dry environments. The Ningxia subspecies breeds in the middle of the subspecies and migrates to the tropics in winter. Paler than the nominate subspecies or Grey Berhae, it is sometimes listed separately as Deeppe Grey Shrike (Lanius pallidirostis), which is extremely adapted to arid areas with sparse vegetation. It belongs to the family Berau family of passeriformes and is closely related to the grey berhoeae. Although they appear together, they do not mate with each other. They are separated because they choose a different place to live.
It is found in northern Ningxia, northwestern Gansu, and Xinjiang.
The South Grey Berao has been in pairs since early April and has nested in May. The nest is placed on a tree that is not high, 0.5-1.5 meters above the ground.
