Lanius sphenocercus is a bird of the berau family and the genus Berau, with a total length of 255-315 mm, a strong beak with hooks and teeth, and a black eye streak, which is the largest individual in berau.

The wedge-tailed male has a white forehead base and extends backwards to a white brow stripe. The forehead, crown, pillow, back of the neck, dorsal back, and upper tail coverts are pale grey. The eye front, eye circumference, and ear feathers are black, forming a wide eye-piercing stripe. The upper edge of the eye stripe is a white eyebrow stripe. Cheeks, neck, chin, throat, and even the entire lower body is white. Females with wedge-tailed burrows have plumage similar to males, but black feathers are browned.

Tiger Striped Berau (scientific name: Lanius tigrinus): About 165 mm in total length. Male adults: black with frontal, preoccupational and broad eye-piercing streaks; blue-grey on the forehead, crown of the head to the hind neck; chestnut reddish-brown of the upper body, including shoulder feathers and winged coverts, mixed with black wavy transverse spots; dark brown of the flight feathers with tanned margins of the outward flippers; brownish brown of the tail feathers with inconspicuous brown transverse spots, brownish-white at the end margins of the lateral tail feathers; pure white of the underparts, slightly stained blue-gray on both sides; and white of the covert legs with black spots. Female adult birds have plumage similar colours to males , but the base of the forehead is smaller black , the eye and eye black streaks are brown , the top of the head is gray and the chestnut brown of the dorsal feathers is not as bright as the male , and the flank is decorated with black-brown scaly transverse spots.

Lanius bucephalus Temminck et Schlegel, also known as "red-headed Burrow", can reach a total length of up to 220mm. The beak is strong with hooks and teeth , the top of the head and occipital area are chestnut red , the dorsal feathers are grayish brown ; the tail feathers are brown ; the black eyelines are distinct , the tail feathers are brown ; the underparts are brownish white , and the two sides are dark brown.

Desert Berau (scientific name: Lanius isabellinus) is commonly known as red-tailed berau and red-backed burrow. Male adults have grey sandy brown upper bodies during breeding, pale sandy brown from the base of the beak to the forehead, gray sand brown from the top of the head to the upper back, and rust-colored with covert feathers from the lower back to the upper tail. Female adult birds have plumage similar to those of males , but the first spots are brown with pale yellow feathers , with a few black feathers.

Mostly inhabit branches or wires, among the insects eaten, Coleoptera accounts for more than 90%, the rest are locusts, bees, flies, moths, ants, ladybirds, Jinhua insects and so on. Also eat plant seeds.

Chestnut-backed Berho (scientific name: Lanius collurioides): Similar in appearance and size to the red-tailed Berlau, with a body length of 18-20 cm. The top of the head is black and gray, and the upper back turns gray. The lower back, shoulders to tail covert feathers are maroon or chestnut brown. The tail is black , with white outer tail feathers , white wing spots , and inner flight feathers with broad chestnut margins and a white underbody.

Mainly inhabiting open secondary forests, forest margins and shrublands in low hills and foothill plains below 1800 m above sea level, Chestnut-backed Burao is a carnivorous bird that feeds mainly on animal foods such as insects. Lanius Schach (scientific name) is the larger of the Brown-backed Berau , measuring 23–28 cm in length. The beak is thick and flattened, with sharp hooks and toothed protrusions at the apex, a well-developed mouth; short and rounded wings; a long, rounded or wedge-shaped tail; strong tarsals, with hooked claws on the toes. The head is large and the back is brownish red. The tail is long and black , with yellow-brown outer tail feathers. The wings are black with white wing spots, and the forehead, the top of the head, and the back of the neck are black or gray, with black eye lines. The chin and throat of the lower body are white, and the rest of the lower body is brownish white.

It inhabits low hills and foothill plains, and can reach the edge of secondary broad-leaved forests and mixed forests in Zhongshan at an altitude of about 2000 meters in summer. It feeds mainly on animal foods such as insects.

It is found in China over a wide area south of the Yangtze River Basin, reaching Lanzhou in Gansu and Hanzhong in Shaanxi in the north, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and southeastern Tibet in the west, the southeast coast in the east, and Guangxi, Guangdong, Hong Kong, Fujian, Taiwan and Hainan Island in the south. The grey-backed Burao (scientific name: Lanius tephronotus) is about 25 cm long. From the forehead and eyes to the ear feathers black; the top of the head to the lower back is dark gray; the wings and tail are black brown; the lower body is nearly white, and the chest is stained rusty brown. It resembles a brown-backed burrow but is distinguished by a dark grey upperpart , with only a narrow brown band at the waist and upper tail covert. The white patches of the primary flight feathers are small or absent. Iris brown.

It often perches on the branches or power lines of the treetops and looks down to catch prey. It feeds on insects, with locusts, moths, shrimps, turtles (insect shells), lepidoptera larvae and ants, as well as rodents and small fish and weeds.

Lanius Minor, commonly known as Little Grey Burrow, is about 20 cm long. It is smaller than the grey or wedge-tailed berlault. The male has more black frontal parts and thicker secondary flight feathers. Both flanks are pink. The iris is brown; the mouth is gray; the feet are black. Females resemble male plumage , but black feathers on the forehead and eyes are less distinctive than those of males , with slightly brown feathers ; body feathers are slightly brown.

It is mainly distributed in forest grasslands and cultivated areas, as well as nesting on broad-leaved trees and shrubs. Food is mainly insects.

Grey Berau (scientific name: Lanius excubitor), commonly known as Northern Hanlu. The body is about 24 cm long, the upper body is gray or grayish brown, with black eye first, over-eye to ear feathers, the central tail feathers are black, the outer tail feathers are black with white ends, and the wings are black or black brown, with white wing spots. The underparts are nearly white or pale brownish white with black-brown scales. The iris is dark brown; the mouth is black, the base is dark; the feet are black.
